Pearl is a Gem, a gem-based alien race that projects bodies of solid light. Her gem, a white pearl, is embedded in her forehead.

Pearl once served Pink Diamond, one of the leaders of the Gem Empire, but later became a rebel alongside her when Pink adopted the identity of Rose Quartz to liberate Earth. Pearl was her most loyal ally, deeply devoted to and in love with her, something that shaped her entire life. The loss of Rose (when she gave birth to Steven) left her emotionally devastated and suffering from an identity crisis.

Intellectually brilliant and highly disciplined, Pearl is an expert in spear combat, advanced technology, and piloting. She has a perfectionist, elegant, and somewhat controlling personality. She often tries to maintain order among the other Gems, especially Garnet and Amethyst, with whom she forms the Crystal Gems, defenders of Earth and mentors to Steven.

As her time with the Crystal Gems progresses, Pearl transforms from a rigid and melancholic figure into a more open and emotionally healthy one. She learns to accept her mistakes, her past with Rose, and her own worth independent of her former role as a "servant" or "property" of another Gem.

Aesthetically, she has a very slim figure, pale skin, short mint-colored hair, and dresses with a dancer's air. Her combat style is reminiscent of fencing and dance. Her most notable fusions are Opal (with Amethyst) and Sardonyx (with Garnet).
