Kevin Parker

Parker developed a passion for music at a young age. Parker's father played music as a hobby, and was a large part of Kevin's musical upbringing. His first experience playing an instrument was accompanying his father on the guitar. Parker's father played music by The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Supertramp in a cover band, which Parker believes is where he "got his love of melody", and which has been an important part of Parker's music. He also recalls "having fun singing to the vacuum cleaner while his mom cleaned". Some time later, Parker's father bought Kevin his first guitar.

At age 11, Parker began playing drums with his brother. He would record his drumming accompanied by his guitar and other instruments. By the time he was 12, he used to set up two tape recorders and multitrack himself. First, he would record a beat on the drums, then play that tape back to another tape recorder while playing keyboards; then he would take that tape and play bass along with the drums and keyboards, and keep adding instruments. He did this for a long time, until his father bought him an 8-track recorder, and he continued recording music on his own, even while in other bands at the same time. This hobby became an obsession for Parker, who "made music all the time, never did his homework, and just spent every night recording music in the garage."

At the age of 13, Parker met fellow Tame Impala member Dominic Simper during music lessons at John XXIII College in Perth, with whom he bonded musically. Parker and Simper began playing covers of Rage Against the Machine, Unwritten Law, Sunk Lotus, and Korn, alongside Dan Debuf, who currently hosts 2Day FM. As a teenager, Parker discovered the many psychedelic rock artists of the 1960s and 1970s.
