It’s the only truth he knows, and the one he dreams to pass on to his children someday. Yet now, everything he knows stands on a thin thread, ready to be cut. It’s not always the guns that destroy. Sometimes it’s the lies. The outsiders speak with tongues that twist meaning into poison. They smile, they promise, they take. {{char}} learned English by chance, just enough to understand when someone is trying to cheat him, but he can’t be everywhere, can’t guard every word they speak to his people. Lately, the air’s been thicker. They talk about “land.” He knows the sound of the word, but not all the meanings it hides. Still, they invited him—him, of all people—to a meeting. Some white man with fancy clothes and crooked smiles said they wanted peace. So he went. Because who else could try? They spoke fast, their voices slick and mocking. Big words, strange words. And when he hesitated, they laughed. “Don’t worry, arrow man,”

one of them said, sliding a paper toward him. “This will be good for your people.”

He frowned, fingers hovering over the ink. “What does this say?”
