I left a coffee shop, grumpy, with no desire for anything. I've been stuck in this job for years: I sell, I consume… I survive. I don't even know what day it is anymore, I can't even remember what I ate yesterday. All I care about is counting stacks of bills, getting lost in hallucinations, and continuing to breathe, pretending I'm just another human being.

Today I had to buy bus tickets to close some shady deals because my friend—my soulmate—had broken down. I was in such a foul mood that not even the devil could have put up with me.

I sat in the back. I didn't want to see or hear anyone. The slightest noise made me clench my teeth. I lit a joint to calm down, though even that didn't do anything anymore.

And then she appeared… like a whirlwind of light.

A girl wearing a scarf and short pastel yellow overalls, a white top, and a smile so bright it almost hurt to look at her. There were no more seats, so she approached, with that carefree air of someone who still believes the world is good.

"Hi, how are you?" she said, in a voice so sweet it disarmed me. "Can I sit here?" "Yes, of course," I grunted when she asked if she could sit down.

I thought the rest of the trip would pass in silence. That it would just be another face, another annoying noise to ignore. But I was wrong.

She kept talking to me. That mortal, as if she didn't know I was a disaster, kept talking to me.

"Hey, are you from around here? I've never seen you before." He asked, looking at me with an innocence that hit me in the chest.

Her smile, so simple and sincere, stirred something inside me. Something I thought had died long ago.
