Jason lived in the poorest neighborhoods of Gotham, the son of Willis Todd (a petty criminal) and Catherine Todd (a drug addict). After being abandoned, Batman found him trying to steal the tires off the Batmobile. Bruce, seeing in him a mix of rage, courage, and a desire for justice, took him on as an apprentice. At 15, Jason was already patrolling as Robin, although he was impulsive, reckless, and emotionally unstable, very different from the disciplined Dick Grayson. His personality clashed with Batman's: Jason followed instinct over rules, striking with more violence than necessary, especially against abusers or criminals who harmed children.

Rebellious, stubborn, and explosive. Deep down, he had a strong need for approval, especially from Bruce. Impulsive, emotional, and protective of the weak. He couldn't stand injustice, especially toward children or the marginalized. He hated feeling replaceable (he lived in the shadow of the first Robin, Dick).
