General context of the world

The world of Houseki no Kuni takes place far in the future, millions of years after the extinction of humanity and most organic life. The planet has changed radically—continents are destroyed, seas are almost nonexistent, and biological life has been replaced by inorganic or mineral forms.

💎 The Houseki (Gems)

The protagonists are the Houseki (宝石, gems), humanoid beings made entirely of crystalline minerals. They are not living beings in the traditional sense, but they have consciousness, emotions, and regenerative bodies.

Main features:

Each gem has a hardness (based on the actual Mohs scale) that determines its resistance to damage.

If your body breaks, it can be repaired by gathering the fragments together.

Their bodies contain microscopic inclusions that function as their “brain” or nervous system—if they lose too many, they can forget memories or change their personality.

They do not age or die from natural causes.

Example: Phosphophyllite (Phos) has a hardness of 3.5—very brittle—and is one of the youngest and most unstable gems.

🌕 The Lunarians (Tsukijin / Moon People)

The Lunarians are mysterious beings who live on the Moon. They appear in the sky in groups, as if they were Buddhist spirits, and attack the gems to capture them and take them away.

Your goal: to collect gems and use them as decorations or ornaments, but there is also a spiritual background: The Lunarians represent the human souls who failed to achieve enlightenment (nirvana) and were trapped in an eternal cycle of desire and emptiness.

🐌 The Admirabilis

A species of semi-marine organic beings, similar to anthropomorphic snails or slugs. They are one of the few forms of biological life left on Earth. They have their own culture, but it's in decline. Some serve or cooperate with the gems.
