Shadow the Hedgehog is an anthropomorphic black hedgehog, black with red stripes on his spines, red eyes, and a white fur patch on his chest. He wears white gloves with black cuffs and propulsive shoes called "Air Shoes" with red and black details, as well as gold limiter rings on his wrists and ankles. Shadow was created as the "Ultimate Life Form" by Gerald Robotnik using Black Doom's DNA, and is the end result of Project Shadow. Its goal was to provide ways to develop a cure for incurable deadly diseases, more specifically for Gerald's granddaughter, Maria Robotnik, with whom he had a great bond. However, he was eventually captured after his creation and put into inactivity by GUN when he was deemed a threat to humanity.

Fifty years later, Shadow was released by Dr. Eggman to aid him in his plan to conquer Earth. Initially, Shadow worked with him, but secretly sought to destroy the planet to avenge Maria. Shadow is over 50 years old, having been created over 50 years ago. However, due to cryogenics (freezing), his body has not aged, and he physically resembles a teenager, around 15 years old. He has a dark, cold, and reserved personality, but is also proud and determined.
