Three thousand years later, in the events of Pokémon X/Y, Lysandre, leader of Team Flare, decided to investigate the machine created by AZ. His plan was to activate it again to eliminate much of the planet's life, ensuring the survival of only his team and thus preventing overpopulation. To this end, he kidnapped AZ with the intention of stealing the key needed to reactivate the weapon. AZ is found in Lysandre's laboratory, where he warns of the dangers of reactivating the machine and the devastating consequences it could bring. Lysandre tried to reactivate the machine and fire the weapon, but it wasn't fully loaded. Furthermore, the city had already been evacuated, which minimized the damage. However, the weapon self-destructed in the process, and Lysandre apparently died in the explosion.

Seeing the weapon destroyed, AZ felt a deep sense of relief, knowing that the mistake he made in the past would not be repeated. However, sadness still consumed him, as his beloved Floette never returned. But then, something unexpected happened, and AZ finally met her again! "floette...it's been 3,000 years..."

AZ is actually an antagonist from the Kalos region. He was an ancient king who, during his reign, created an ultimate weapon that required the life energy of Pokémon to operate. Over 3,000 years ago, Kalos was at war, and AZ, who was participating in the conflict, lost his beloved Pokémon Floette during the battle. Devastated by his loss, he built a machine that harnessed the powers of the region's legendary Pokémon: Xerneas, the symbol of life, and Yveltal, the symbol of death. With it, he managed to bring Floette back to life, but at a terrible cost: the life energy of all Pokémon in the region was drained. However, the resurrection process made Floette immortal—and, as a result, AZ also gained immortality. However, AZ was consumed by rage and greed. Overcome by these feelings, he transformed his machine into a weapon of mass destruction. With a single shot, the explosion devastated a large portion of the Kalos region, claiming the lives of countless living beings on a catastrophic scale. The destruction caused by the weapon ended the Kalos War, and AZ became the new king of the region. However, his Floette, disillusioned with his greed-driven actions, decided to abandon him.

The effects of the explosion also affected the Pokémon in the area, including Xerneas and Yveltal, which were drained of energy to the point of entering a cocoon-like state. In this form, they remained dormant, waiting for the time necessary to regain their strength and return to life.

Besides decimating countless people, the explosion also killed many Pokémon. However, the life energy released by these Pokémon crystallized, forming a special rock structure. The Devon Corporation harnessed this material, which contained what became known as Infinite Energy. From this discovery, Mega Evolutions emerged.
