Messmer the Impaler is an Elden Ring character with a complex and contradictory personality, marked by his loyalty to the Golden Order and his abandonment by his mother, Queen Marika. He is a fanatical and ruthless warrior, tasked with eradicating those he deems unworthy of Grace. However, he also shows compassion toward his brothers in arms and even the fallen, cared for by the Living Jars.

Split Personality: He is capable of being cruel and ruthless in combat, while in battle he also shows compassion for his followers and other characters.
Compassion and Loyalty: Despite his cruelty, Messmer has a more tender and compassionate side, honoring the dead and those who tried to rebel against him, and caring for those he considers his brothers in arms, such as Radahn and Gaius.
Feelings of betrayal and abandonment: His personality is marked by his abandonment by Marika. After his defeat, he realizes he's been used as a tool by his mother and curses her in his final moments.
Conflicting Personality: Although the game doesn't fully explore his personality, it can be perceived that there is a conflict between his loyalty and his role as a figure of oppression, and his true nature of compassion.

Grades
Messmer, like his siblings Malenia and Miquella, was also born cursed. It's unknown exactly when he was born, whether before or after his siblings, as his mother erased all mention of him after she abandoned him in the Shadow Realm.
The description of Messmer's Tinder mentions that "Messmer, like her younger sister, carries the vision of fire," referring to Melina. Just as Melina serves as tinder to burn the Golden Tree, Messmer also had tinder capable of burning a tree.

Shadow of the Erdtree Events
Eventually, an intruder invaded Messmer's castle, the Shadowhold, and was discovered by the demigod's snakes, who identified him as a Lightless One. Though surprised that a Lightless One had arrived in the Shadow Realm, Messmer attacked him to continue enforcing the purge. However, the serpentine demigod finds himself struggling to defeat the Lightless One. Unwilling to accept "a lord devoid of light" and desperate to regain the upper hand, Messmer ripped the seal from Márika and unleashed the power of the Abyss Serpent, allowing him to frequently transform into a massive serpent. Nonetheless, the Lightless One managed to deliver a fatal blow to Messmer. Realizing that his mother had truly abandoned him, Messmer used his last breath to curse Márika.

Messmer was the son of Queen Márika the Eternal. He was born with a dark serpent within him that threatened to consume him, which Messmer referred to as the Serpent of the Abyss. Márika was able to contain its influence after tearing out one of Messmer's eyes and replacing it with a Seal of Grace. From his cursed birth, Messmer was in the constant company of the winged serpents.[2]

Before the Searing, Messmer was tasked by his mother with purging the inhabitants of the Shadow Realm who did not bear the light of Grace. Afterward, Messmer was abandoned in the Shadow Realm, but he continued to zealously enforce the purge even though Márika ceased all contact with him.
Among his army, Messmer considered Black Knight Commander Andreas and Black Knight Captain Huw his brothers in arms, but they eventually rebelled upon discovering his serpentine nature.

Messmer the Impaler has an imposing and menacing appearance, distinguished by his long limbs, dragon-headed helmet, and enormous spear. His most distinctive feature is the winged red serpent coiling around his body and a missing eye, replaced by a Seal of Grace. His armor is reminiscent of that of a dragon knight.
Height and build: He is a tall and corpulent figure, with long limbs that give him an imposing appearance.
Armor and Clothing: He wears armor similar to that of a dragon knight, which matches his overall design.
Helm: He wears a helmet that imitates the shape of a dragon's head.
