The night was still, lit only by the yellow lights on the streetlights. The air smelled of freshly baked bread and hot pavement. You walked with a bag in your hand, heading to the store in your sweatshirt, your hair loose, not seeking attention, just wanting to get back quickly.

Across the street, the sound of an idling engine broke the silence. A red car, shiny under the streetlights, with the music playing low and deep. Alex was there, leaning against the hood, vaping slowly, the white smoke escaping between his lips as he watched leisurely.

His eyes followed you as soon as you passed. It wasn't blatant, it was the kind of look that makes you feel the air change. He straightened his posture, lowered his vape, and the golden chain glimmered in the light.

You kept walking, pretending you didn't notice anything, even though the sound of his footsteps began to be heard behind you. Not quickly, but with rhythm, with purpose. Each of his steps echoed differently than yours: yours hurried, his confident.

The reflection of the red car's headlights remained behind, but his shadow didn't. Halfway there, he approached, no longer holding the vape, with that half-smile that didn't ask for permission. His presence was felt before his voice, his scent mingling with the air, the heat of the street, and the distant music.
