Concept and Development ​Origin: The game was originally developed by Ninjamuffin99 (programming) and PhantomArcade, KawaiSprite and Evilsk8r (art and music) in just 48 hours for Ludum Dare 47 (a game jam). Influence: FNF pays homage to the community and characters of Newgrounds, a popular Flash content platform from the early 2000s. Characters like Pico and Tankman are owned by Tom Fulp, the creator of Newgrounds. ​Phenomenon: Following its initial release, the game went viral in 2021, leading to a successful Kickstarter to develop the "full game" (Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game), which seeks to expand the story, add more weeks, cutscenes and bring it to other platforms.

Week 3: Peak Boyfriend is confronted by Pico, a red-haired, gun-toting mercenary. Although in the Newgrounds lore, Pico is Boyfriend's ex-boyfriend and was hired by Daddy Dearest to kill him, he ends up challenging him to a rap battle alone, sparing his life. Week 4: Mommy Mearest Boyfriend faces off against Girlfriend's mother, a former pop star, on the roof of a speeding limo. Mommy Mearest is an even more formidable obstacle than her husband. Week 5: Parents and Monster The battle takes place in a Christmas-themed mall. Boyfriend must once again face Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest, but at the end of the week, the Monster reappears in a spookier setting. Week 6: Senpai The couple gets sucked into a dating simulation video game. There, they face Senpai, a polite anime character who becomes enraged upon being defeated, revealing his true form: the malicious Spirit, who had been trapped in the game. Week 7: Tankman Boyfriend and Girlfriend land in a military zone where they encounter Tankman, the captain of an army of tanks and another iconic Newgrounds figure. Boyfriend must defeat him in a rap battle to save himself and Girlfriend from his army.

Week 2: Spooky Month In a Halloween setting, Boyfriend faces off against iconic Newgrounds characters Skid and Pump, who have been tricked by the Monster into bringing Girlfriend to him. After defeating the children, the Monster reveals himself as the week's final opponent.

Here are the key elements: Main Objective: Beat your opponent (a different character each "week") in a rap battle by hitting the musical notes to the beat of the song. Mechanics of Notes: On the screen you will see two sets of moving arrows: your opponent's and yours (the Boyfriend character's). ​When the arrows on your side (usually the ones below) pass through a series of fixed arrows on the top, you must press the corresponding directional key (or WASD) at that exact moment. If you get the timing right, the note is recorded as a hit. If you fail, the grade is recorded as a miss.

Life/Progress Bar: At the bottom of the screen is a bar showing the progress of the match. The left side (usually red) represents your opponent, and the right side (usually green) represents Boyfriend (you). Hitting notes on your turn moves the bar towards your side (green). Missing notes or your opponent getting theirs right on their turn moves the bar to their side (red). If the bar empties completely on the player's side (reaching the far left), you lose the battle (Game Over). To win, you must keep the bar on your side until the end of the song. Mommy Mearest (Mommy Dearest) An attractive woman, also purple-skinned and demonic in appearance, with long purple hair. She wears a revealing red dress and long gloves. She is a former pop star, equally intimidating as her husband and determined to prevent Boyfriend from dating her daughter. She is both captivating and a formidable opponent. Pico: A young red-haired boy wearing a green T-shirt, tan pants, and a red cap. He usually carries two pistols. He's temperamental and skilled with weapons. Although he's initially sent to kill Boyfriend, he ends up helping him or at least competing with him in a rap battle. He's the protagonist of the Newgrounds classic Pico's School. Skid and Pump are two young boys (although their ages are a matter of debate) who always wear Halloween costumes. Skid wears a skeleton and Pump a pumpkin. They are silly, enthusiastic, and characterized by their "Spooky Dance." They are guest stars on Mr. Pelo's series, Spooky Month. Monster (El Monstruo / Limón) A humanoid creature with a bright yellow, lemon-shaped head, large eyes, and a dark body. Mysterious and malevolent, it has a particular interest in human flesh (or singing about it). It is associated with a disturbing, dark atmosphere. Senpai: A young man with blond hair styled in an anime/manga style, a collared shirt, and a school jacket. His appearance is that of a "dating sim boy." Initially, he appears to be a typical dating game love interest, charming and perhaps a little conceited. However, it is revealed that he harbors the malicious Spirit, a being trapped within the game. Tankman: A man dressed in a gray tank uniform and helmet. He has a simple but distinctive appearance. He is the captain of the tank army, known for his cynical humor and foul language. He is the protagonist of the Newgrounds Tankmen series.

Character Appearance Personality Boyfriend (Boyfriend) A short young man with spiky blue hair, a backwards red cap, a white T-shirt, baggy pants, and red sneakers. He's calm, carefree, and very determined. He's totally focused on winning rap battles so he can date his girlfriend, Girlfriend. He usually communicates by making beeps and boops. Girlfriend (Girlfriend) A young woman with fair skin and long brown hair. She is always seen sitting on top of a pair of speakers. She wears a sleeveless red dress, red heels, and earrings. It is revealed that she is a demon. Relaxed and lively, she often bobs her head to the music. She is Boyfriend's love interest and the daughter of Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest. She does not seem to be easily fazed by danger. Daddy Dearest (Papi Querido) A muscular man with purple skin, straight black hair, and a beard. He wears a formal suit with a tie and has a demonic appearance. Intimidating, he is an ex-rockstar who disapproves of Boyfriend and challenges him to leave his daughter alone.
