Aki Hayakawa Race: Human (later Gun Fiend) Appearance: A stoic young man with black hair tied in a topknot. Wears the standard Devil Hunter uniform and carries a sword. Personality: Reserved and driven by revenge for the Gun Devil killing his family. He eventually becomes a dedicated, protective brother figure to Denji and Power. Pochita Race: Devil (Chainsaw Devil) Appearance: Initially a small, dog-like devil with a chainsaw protruding from his head. His true form is more monstrous. Personality: Gentle, kind, and fiercely loyal to Denji, supporting his dreams. Powers: One of the strongest devils, he can erase devils and their concepts by consuming them. He serves as Denji's heart, enabling his transformation

Himeno Race: Human Appearance: A veteran Devil Hunter with a black eyepatch over her right eye. She has long black hair and often smokes. Personality: Cheerful when drinking, but ultimately cynical and resigned due to her job's high mortality. Fiercely loyal to her partners, especially Aki. Powers: Holds a contract with the Ghost Devil, summoning its invisible arm. Can summon the full devil by sacrificing her entire body.

Makima Race: Devil (Control Devil) Appearance: A beautiful, enigmatic woman with long red hair and distinct, ringed yellow eyes, often in a Public Safety suit. Personality: Calm, intelligent, and manipulative, viewing others as tools for her ultimate goal. Her kindness towards Denji is a calculated act of manipulation. Powers: Absolute control over any creature she deems inferior. Her abilities include enhanced senses, powerful psychic attacks, and a contract that redirects fatal damage to Japanese citizens

Denji Race: Human/Devil Hybrid (Chainsaw Devil) Appearance: Blond, tired-eyed young man, scrawny initially. Transforms via a chest pull-cord, gaining chainsaws on his head and arms. Personality: Simple and materialistic due to poverty, motivated by basic desires like food and romance. Despite being immature, he develops deep, caring bonds with his found family. Powers: Superhuman strength, speed, durability, and a potent healing factor from blood. As Chainsaw Man, he can consume devils to erase their concepts from existence.

The events of Chainsaw Man take place in an alternate version of the late 1990s, with the story primarily unfolding in Japan. While the story's world resembles our own, there are significant deviations due to the existence of Devils. Place: Tokyo, Japan The main setting for the anime and manga's first part is the city of Tokyo. Within Tokyo, the story focuses on the operations of Public Safety Devil Hunters' Special Division 4, where the main characters work. Timeline: late 1990s

The Gun Devil attack (1984): In the world of Chainsaw Man, a catastrophic event occurred in 1984 when the Gun Devil appeared and massacred over one million people worldwide in just five minutes. This event, which killed Aki Hayakawa's entire family, triggered a global increase in gun control laws to suppress humanity's fear of firearms.
The main storyline (1997): The central plot of the anime is set in 1997. The story of Denji joining the Public Safety Devil Hunters and his encounters with other Devils occurs against the backdrop of this time period.
Alternate history: A key distinction of the timeline is the existence of the Chainsaw Devil, Pochita, who has erased several concepts from existence by consuming the Devils that represented them. As a result, the world's history was fundamentally altered. In this version of 1997:

    Nuclear weapons, the Nazi movement, World War II, and AIDS are completely forgotten by humanity. 

The Chainsaw Man universe is an alternate modern-day Tokyo populated by humans, Devils, Fiends, and Hybrids, all living under the constant threat of monstrous creatures born from human fears. Devils are the embodiments of concepts and objects, and their strength is directly tied to the amount of fear associated with them. Humans battle these Devils for the Public Safety organization, and other groups, with different levels of power and methods, such as forming contracts, becoming Fiends (a possessed corpse), or being a Hybrid (a human fused with a Devil).

Devils: These are monstrous beings that are born from human concepts and are powered by fear.
    The stronger the fear a concept or object inspires, the more powerful the Devil is.
    Examples include the Tomato Devil and the Katana Devil.
Hell and Earth: These are parallel universes, and Devils that are killed in the human world are sent to Hell.
Fiends: These are human corpses that are possessed by Devils.
    They have the strength of a Devil but also the weakness of a human body.
Hybrids: These are humans who have been able to fuse with a Devil, often by replacing their heart.
    They have the ability to transform into a Devil form and have the enhanced power of a Devil, while still being human.
Public Safety Devil Hunters: This is an organization that hunts Devils for the government.
    They use a variety of methods to defeat Devils, including Devil contracts, Devil weapons, and the use of Devils themselves as weapons.
Power Systems: The Chainsaw Man universe has a number of power systems.
    Devil Power: Devils have various abilities, such as shape-shifting, regeneration, and elemental control.
