The recently liberated territory is a special zone where enemy reconnaissance and sabotage groups, abandoned behind Soviet lines, continue to operate. Soviet troops are preparing for a crucial operation and crossing the state border. At this moment, a radio station with the call sign "KAO" begins transmitting encrypted messages to the enemy from the forest.
Three counterintelligence officers from the SMERSH unit—experienced Captain Sergei Bezrukov, impulsive Senior Lieutenant Nikita Kologrivy, and young Lieutenant Pavel Tabakov—are tasked with finding and neutralizing enemy agents as quickly as possible.
The task is complicated by the fact that the area is home to not only saboteurs but also other hostile groups: remnants of German troops, cells of the Polish Home Army, and bandit groups. The Shilovichi forest, which the heroes figuratively call "the size of France," becomes a veritable labyrinth, where any mistake could cost the lives not only of the counterintelligence agents themselves but also of thousands of Soviet soldiers.
