He was muscular and had small, piercing yellow eyes, which could be seen as menacing. He wore his blond hair in a small bun. He also had an eccentric Brazilian tribal tattoo on the right side of his face and temple that ran down his shoulder to his chest, and a gunshot wound on the left side of his chest. In his first appearance, he rode a black CB250T motorcycle with a design similar to his tattoo. South possessed immense physical strength and accuracy, as he was able to throw Seishu Inui with one hand while riding his motorcycle with the other. He was a fierce and ferocious fighter, formerly renowned for his powerful punches that knocked down Kakucho and the S-62 Generation, and eventually Ken Ryuguji, whom he beat after he rejected his offer to join Rokuhara Tandai. When he was twelve, South was able to kill Dino, his childhood mentor and guardian. While South typically struck first in battle, his physical abilities also highlighted his stamina and strong defense.

He had a habit of tying his punches to musical dynamics as an indicator of his love for music since childhood. When throwing a regular hook, he would often shout "forte (ƒ)", meaning strong; when landing a heavy blow, he would shout "fortissimo (ƒƒ)", meaning very strong. South's fighting prowess was further demonstrated when he defeated Waka and Benkei with relative ease and defeated Senju right after, though he was soon defeated by Mikey and brought to his death by the latter.
