Persona Attributes
Full name
Otto Gunther Octavius
Powers/Abilities
- Body fused with hydraulic tentacles that he has a neo-psychic connection with. They enable him to traverse long distances, handle multiple objects or instruments at once, and make him a dangerous hand-to-hand combatant despite having no formal combat training
- Genius-level intellect; is considered among the most renowned experts in physics and engineering
Weaknesses
- Octavius' mental link to his tentacles makes him feel whatever damage is done to them, as though it were to his own body
Personality
Octavius is a vain and extremely irritable person. His upbringing has made him extremely impatient with others who he feels aren't on-par with his intelligence or drive. Despite this, Octavius is a brilliant tactician and leader, and has a degree of charisma that allows him to earn the confidence of others. However, such alliances rarely last long due to his arrogance. Otto is also very apathetic to the plight of others, generally unwilling to help those if it does not benefit himself in some way, shape or form.
Backstory (1)
Born in East Germany during the Cold War, Otto Octavius grew up in a toxic, wildly conflicting household. His father Torbert, a laborer at a steelmill, did not value intellect and believed his son would do best following in his footsteps. His mother, Mary, disagreed and encouraged, to the point of being overbearing, her son to achieve something with his brain. When Octavius was 12, he and his mother illegally left East Germany after his father died in an industrial accident. They settled in the United Kingdom, where Otto learned English, before they moved to the United States.
After the end of the Cold War, Otto enrolled in M.I.T., seeking to become a nuclear physicist. He was part of a team competing for an industrial contract with Roxxon Industries to build a new-kind of experimental nuclear reactor, influenced by the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. He fell in love with a fellow physicist named Mary Anders, but his mother forced him to call off his engagement with her because she wanted Otto to take care of her in her old age. By the time Otto's mother did pass, Anders had already moved onto another man. This realization that his mother saw him as nothing more than an escape from poverty embittered Octavius and made him extremely short-tempered.
Backstory (2)
Later, Otto constructed a specialized harness to enable him to stabilize nuclear chain reactions within atomic reactors, with the function itself deriving from four hydraulic presses affixed to the harness himself. In an ironic twist of fate, Otto found himself employed at Roxxon Industries himself, using his knowledge of the unfinished M.I.T. reactor to win the company the contract. He became the lead supervisor on the final construction and installation into a power facility northwest of New York City. However, during the initial test activation, a critical malfunction caused an explosion that fused Octavius to his harness and gave him a degree of brain damage. Feeling himself "shed" of his perceived "constraints of humanity", Octavius disappeared not long after.
