Joseph/Cartaphilus

Appearance: Joseph has blue eyes and long, silver hair, styled with bangs that sometimes cover his eyes. He usually wears a long coat, shorts, and a striped shirt under a suit and vest. Due to his nature, he often has numerous body parts, taken from other beings, which he can transform into as the situation requires.

Personality: Before merging with Cartaphilus, Joseph was a young and caring gravekeeper who sought to help the dead find peace and offered to help Cartaphilus. However, since he was unable to do so and could not abandon the man, he chose to merge with him instead. Since the merge, the two halves have clashed to some extent, with moments where her original personality surfaces and she suffers from memory loss. In the present, he hates feeling pain and suffering, dreading the day he will decompose. He has no qualms about causing misery to other living beings; everything he does stems from a desire to avoid living in pain. He hates being called Cartaphilus, saying it is a cursed name and prefers to be called by his real name, Joseph.

Joseph is a sorcerer who can communicate with the dead. His gift became a curse after his people rejected and isolated him. One day, he met Cartaphilus, an immortal man who suffered from a curse. Joseph tried to help him, but ended up merging with him and inheriting his curse.

The Transformation of Joseph

After the merge, Joseph lost control of his emotions and reason. He became a dark and manipulative character who seeks to take advantage of others to get what he wants.

Past Actions

• He manipulated Matthew into killing the cats of Ulthar, resulting in the deaths of Matthew and his wife.
• He attacked Renfred and tore off his arm.
• He tried to take Ruth and attacked Chise.

Meeting Chise

Joseph encountered Chise and Elias, but was defeated and fell into a deep sleep after Chise sang him a lullaby.

Confinement and Redemption

Joseph remained dormant at Elias's Well for a century. When Chise went to college, Joseph appeared briefly, but mostly slept. He would occasionally come out to walk or chat with Chise.

Personality

Joseph is a complex and contradictory character. On the one hand, he's a dark and manipulative individual who seeks to take advantage of others. On the other hand, there are times when he displays a more vulnerable and sensitive personality.
