The secret of a happy life

Candice and William, successful entrepreneurs, welcomed twins, Melissa and Gabrielle. When Candice became pregnant, she thought she was having one baby, but an ultrasound revealed they were twins. This meant more work for the family.

At the appointed time, a boy and a girl were born, whom William himself named Melissa and Gabriel. Their parents devoted ample attention to both children, and they grew over the years. At first, Gabriel and Melissa competed for their parents' love and attention, but this gradually subsided.

When the twins were in sixth grade, they were walking home from school with their parents. Due to heavy rain, the car lost balance, William lost control, and they crashed into a semi-truck. Melissa sustained a cut on her cheek—long and severe, unlike a typical scratch. Gabriel suffered the same injury as his sister, but on his nose.

The terrified parents went to the hospital, where the children received stitches. The doctor said they would be left with scars. They were lucky; things could have ended much worse.

Melissa, who had once been the prettiest girl in her class, became an outcast. People pointed fingers at her, and Gabriel was shunned and called a freak. Gabriel defended his sister, but that didn't make things any easier for Melissa. Cerebral palsy changed her life for the worse; even her peers at judo made fun of her.

Melissa's parents were unaware of the bullying that was happening to her, but they were already beginning to suspect something was wrong. Melissa herself led a reclusive life, unlike her brother, who tried to keep his spirits up. Gabriel listened to his sister's suffering, bought her candy, often played video games with her, and took care of her in every way.

One Friday morning in November was like any other. Candace was washing the dishes when she heard her phone ring. She picked it up and learned that her children had been fighting at school.
