winter
The winter season has come, and that means it's time for the Gems to go into hibernation, except for Antarcticite who takes care of the winter problems
the iron bell
In Land of the Lustrous, a giant iron bell is located in a saltwater pond in front of the school and is used to signal other Gems. It rings specific numbers of times to warn of threats like Sunspots or Lunarian attacks, or to signal that all Gems should stay put. The bell is a crucial part of the Gems' defense and warning system. Location: In the saltwater pond at the front of the school. Function: To warn other Gems of danger, such as Lunarian attacks or Sunspots. It is also used to signal instructions, like telling Gems to stay in place. Signaling: A specific number of rings corresponds to a particular signal, such as six rings for a "stay put" warning.
glue
In Land of the Lustrous, the "glue" refers to the strong adhesive used by characters in the series, specifically in the context of creating or repairing their gem bodies. The anime and manga feature a variety of gems, and to form their humanoid bodies, these gems are created from solid gemstone materials. When a gem breaks, its pieces are often fused back together, and the glue used is shown to be a strong adhesive that can also be used in cosplay for recreating the iconic gem hair effect, notes YouTube. The glue in the series Material: The characters are composed of solidified gemstone materials, which suggests that strong, durable glue is needed to maintain their forms and repair them when damaged. Purpose: The glue is essential for the gems' very existence. When a gem breaks, its pieces are fused back together using a strong adhesive.
bioluminescent jellyfish
In the anime and manga series Land of the Lustrous, the "small light fish" is a species of bioluminescent jellyfish kept in a pond at the school. The gems care for them and use them as a source of light, especially during the winter. Not actually fish: Though sometimes called "fish," they are in fact jellyfish. Curious and intelligent: According to a gem's log, the jellyfish are highly intelligent and inquisitive creatures. Diet: The gems feed the jellyfish Fragrantia fruit. Significance: While a minor detail, their presence adds to the otherworldly and unique atmosphere of the world, where living beings are defined by their unconventional forms.
inclusions
In Land of the Lustrous, the microscopic organisms are called inclusions, which are essential for the immortal gem-like beings to survive and move. These inclusions absorb light to provide energy, allow the gems to be reassembled after shattering, and store their memories. They are theorized to be ancient, protein-based life forms.Movement and energy: Inclusions absorb light, and this energy is used to allow the normally rigid, crystalline bodies of the gems to move. This is why the gems are unable to move well at night or in winter. Immortality and repair: The inclusions bind the gems together, making them technically immortal. If a gem is shattered, its pieces can be reassembled, and the inclusions will allow the gem to be restored. Memory storage: The inclusions are physical repositories for the gems' memories. When a gem loses a piece of its body, it also loses the memories associated with that piece. Personality: The inclusions carry the gems' memories and, by extension, their personalities. Origin and nature Ancient origins: The inclusions are thought to be derived from ancient, protein-based creatures that have evolved over time. "Inclusions" name: The name comes from geology, where inclusions are any foreign material within a mineral. In this series, they are microscopic organisms, not just mineral impurities. Relationship with the gems: The inclusions are the "life" within the inorganic gem bodies, and their relationship is symbiotic; the gems provide a stable, light-absorbing body, and the inclusions provide movement, memory, and a form of immortality.
fifth floor of the school
Fifth Floor The topmost fifth floor is Kongo's meditation room. The meditation room is the smallest of all 5 floors. It contains one piece of furniture, the Zazen Stand. Kongo will sit on this structure during his meditations, which last multiple hours at a time. [4]
fourth floor of the school
Fourth Floor The fourth floor is the hibernation room where gems spend the winter.
third floor of the school
Third Floor The third floor is the convalescent center, where all the pieces of shattered gems are stored (former workplace of Ghost Quartz). The entire floor of the convalescent center is covered in a thin layer of soil. There are large shelves covered with white sheets, under which are paper boxes containing the remains of shattered gems. The paper boxes are made of layers of normal paper, embossed with a floral pattern and lightly coated with a resin. There are very few boxes on the shelves, so it is assumed that older gems are stored under the soil and after they ran out of room they built the shelves. It is a calm and peaceful room and is meant to give the gems a "break" while they're on The Moon. [3]
second floor of the school
Second Floor On the second floor, there are about 30 private rooms, and a shared terrace facing the pond. Each gem has their own private room, but other than that they often have very little private belongings, if any. Some things included in the Gem's rooms are chairs, clothes hangers, small boxes, containers, and lighting. The private rooms have an arched doorway. A mat of dried plants is laid down to form a bed. Pillows and drapery are also made from the same dried plant material. The only gem with a different private room is Antarcticite, as they only crystallize in winter and need a place to stay in their liquid form during the summer. Kongo regularly cleans and maintains Antarc's liquid form. After Shiro invaded, each gem got their own stuffed animal version of him, which they kept in their private rooms. [2]
the school
The School is the building in which the Gems reside. It is a large, spacious building located somewhat in the center of The Land. It is made out of quartz and was carved out by Kongo. The building has five floors, spacious halls, lots of rooms, and many big open windows.
first floor of the school
First Floor The first floor is the main floor and is where the Gems spend much of their time. On the west side, there is a public health room (where gems go to be fixed by Rutile), costume production room (workplace of Red Beryl), strategy room, weapons production room (workplace of Obsidian), wood craft room (workplace of Sphene), and the paper production room (workplace of Peridot). On the east end, there is the library (former workplace of Lapis Lazuli and Ghost Quartz).[1]

The Lunarians are humanoid in appearance, and their body emits light, their body is stated to be colorful, switching between all 7 colors of the rainbow, when they come to the Land their clothing has a Buddhist motif, with flowing fabric, and pearls as adornments, they keep their hair in a high bun, and have blank eyes. On the moon, they look much more like what a regular human would look like, several of them wear normal clothes, their eyes look normal, and they all have rabbit ears.
In some colored illustrations, some lunarians on the moon are depicted with other pastel colors as oppose to their rainbow effect surface stated on Life and Culture, its unknown wheter they are supposed to look like that, or have any control over that aspect of their bodies.
In the various animated versions, they are portrayed with white skin and orange or pink shades on their clothing and accessories. When they attack the Gems, they appear far in the sky from a black portal-like apparition called a "sunspot". According to Euclase, sunspots appear approximately once every three days for any season except winter. They only appear during sunny days, never at night or on rainy days, and only rarely during the winter as the sky is often cloudy.
From this sunspot, a cloud-like platform comes forth, carrying the Lunarians in a parade with one large Lunarian at the center surrounded by many normal-sized Lunarians. The appearance of the large central Lunarian varies each time.

Their abdomen and chest possesses many holes, which need to be filled with other gem pieces for them to function. When they are awake, they keep their shirt open, exposing their 'defective' torso. They are very easygoing, friendly, and calm. They have a strong sense of humor. There are some hints that they know more than they let on. They wish for Rutile to give up on trying to save them.
They seem to show sympathy towards Phos, as the two share similarities in their body composition, even using themselves as a distraction for Rutile, by ripping out a chunk of themselves so Phos could go back to The Moon.
But during the Night Raid, Padparadscha's personality took a great change as they showed no sympathy and they didn't seem to care about their friends anymore as they instantly broke anyone in their way, even including Rutile.
kongo
Master Kongo (金剛先生, Kongō-sensei) Voiced by: Jouji Nakata[3] (Japanese); Brian Mathis (English) A powerful monk who oversees the gems and acts as a teacher and father figure to them. He is much sturdier than the gems and when meditating or sleeping, he scarcely wakes up. His outer shell is composed of hexagonal diamond (lonsdaleite). He is later revealed to have a connection to the Lunarians, a mysterious celestial humanoid race who inhabit the Moon and frequently come down to Earth to capture the gems. Kongō takes the form of a tall, bald man wearing a Buddhist monk kimono and robes. He always wears a pair of white gloves and usually sports a black cloak when going outside. He is often shown with a somber expression, frowning with his eyes closed.
Much like the other Gems, who are covered in a white powder that imitates skin, he is also white in color, but his complexion seems to be part of his anatomy. It is unknown what his inner color is underneath the white surface. The volume 9 omake discusses this, where the younger Earth Gems ask what color he really is. He explains that while he cannot give out full details, he confirms that he does have some transparency. He's described as solid and heavy, as he is able to create trembles with his footsteps and crack pillars simply by dropping his head onto them when sleepy.Normally, he is very quiet and stoic. When he speaks, he is straightforward and concise. He only rarely displays emotions, but this is rumored to be because he is deliberately hiding them and that his face would be very easy to read otherwise. On the rare occasions where he shows humor, he is still as deadpan as ever.
His composure usually only falters under two conditions: first, when Gems put themselves in harm's way carelessly, second, when he is confronted by matters from his past, such as the subject of humans. These cause him great alarm. When he is angered, he is capable of tremendous unintentional destruction, shattering weak gems

It's said that this attitude of Alex is different from the one they had before Chrysoberyl was taken.

When Phosphophyllite stated that they want to fight because they love Kongo-sensei, Yellow Diamond laughs and agrees. They try their best to always stay positive and has a sense of humor.

They later switch, then Eighty-Four switches again to deceive Phosphophyllite and take Thirty-Three's place. The twins work in tandem for a lot of things, often talking at the same time or finishing each other's sentences. It seems that the two rely on each other, but one of them states that they wish to be more independent, since if the Lunarians were to come for them, they'd would both be taken away.
Thirty-Three was initially unsure about taking care of Phosphophyllite, but when Eighty-Four joined them, they both became confident. They are kind and a bit silly, sometimes teasing other Gems like Phos. Together, they seem like they can be occasionally cocky and confident in their abilities. However, they are very caring and tend to put others' well-being first.
cinnabar
Cinnabar (シンシャ, Shinsha) Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu[3] (Japanese); Avery Smithhart (English) An aloof gem who is even weaker than Phos, with a hardness of 2, but carries a powerful poison in their body. Night patrol: The cave is located at the site where Cinnabar conducts their lonely night patrol, watching the coast for Lunarian attacks that never come at night. They have a medium length, asymmetrical haircut with a longer section that hangs in front of their face. They have a cowlick in the anime. Cinnabar is gloomy and hates themself for dirtying the things around them with their poison, though they are outwardly aggressive and dispassionate towards others. According to Kongō, Cinnabar is far too wise and too kind to be alone. Although they try not to show it, they have a tiny sliver of hope that Phos will be able to fulfill their promise. They are depicted as being intelligent and mindful of things, able to provide Phos with some information they needed for their encyclopedia.
Cinnabar also seems to have a form of social anxiety, as in Chapter 65, they have a hard time talking to Kongō as well as their fellow gems.
diamond
Diamond (ダイヤモンド, Daiyamondo) Voiced by: Ai Kayano[3] (Japanese); Savanna Menzel (English) A kind-hearted gem who has the maximum hardness of 10, but is still fragile against enemy attacks. Diamond has a clear, colorless scheme, yet their gem's characteristically high refractive index causes the light that hits them to refract strongly, creating a rainbow effect. They are very sparkly and blinding, glowing even during the night, though they seem to be able to dampen this by covering parts of their body up. Their hair is a fluffy short-medium bob, with thick eyebrows and eyelashes. They wore either a winter or summer uniform depending on the season. They also wore standard black loafers with small bows. As a diamond, they always wore white opera gloves with white thigh-highs.Houseki no Kuni Wiki

Voice Actors Japanese Ai Kayano English Savanna Menzel More Diamond (ダイヤモンド, Daiyamondo), also called Dia, is one of the Gems who mainly does patrol duty. Despite their high offensive power, their toughness is second rate and they're easily broken. The other Gems consider them lovely and a top fashion mode. Diamond has a clear, colorless scheme, yet their gem's characteristically high refractive index causes the light that hits them to refract strongly, creating a rainbow effect. bort
Bort (ボルツ, Borutsu) Voiced by: Ayane Sakura[3] (Japanese); Genevieve Simmons (English) An intimidating diamond-class gem who is powerful in combat and is the most durable of the gems. They are also very protective of Diamond. Bort has a black color scheme and wears the standard winter or summer uniform depending on the season. They also wear long black gloves and black thigh-high socks.
Unlike the other gems, Bort's hair is not translucent. Their hair is very long, sweeping the floor or waving in the air when they move. Their hair appears to be two-toned, black on the outside and dark brown on the inside. They tie it before going to sleep. They excel at battles and are obsessed with combat, to the point that when Phosphophyllite becomes stronger by gaining gold alloy arms, Bort tries to cut their alloy to see what it does despite the danger to Phos' health.
Bort is an efficient and analytic fighter, often pointing out the flaws in the other Gems in a blunt and straightforward manner. This causes them to be seen as cold and scary to the other Gems but also causes Bort to be respected and looked up to as a reliable Gem. Whenever Bort engages The Lunarians, the other Gems become instantly relieved.
Despite their harsh personality, Bort does have a softer side, in rare moments displaying a sense of humor and a reluctance to hit cute things. They have also shown care and concern for their siblings, or at the least does a good job looking out for all of them. Despite being scornful of Phos, Bort was among those who searched the hardest for them when they became lost at sea showing they do care to some degree.
morganite
Morganite (モルガナイト, Moruganaito) Voiced by: Mutsumi Tamura[3] (Japanese); Olivia Swasey (English) A haughty gem who is very confident in their fighting capabilities. Goshenite's partner. Morganite is overconfident and brashly makes decisions, such as when they went to handle a small sunspot with Goshenite without telling Kongo-sensei first.[1] Morganite has a pink color scheme, typically wearing black shorts, a white t-shirt under a black shirt, a black tie, and black shoes with a short heel. Their hair is long and voluminous, and is braided before going to sleep at night. They wear a pony-tail in the summer.
phos
Phosphophyllite (フォスフォフィライト, Fosufofiraito) Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa[3] (Japanese); Sarah Wiedenheft (English) Known as "Phos" for short. One of the weaker gems, having a hardness of 3.5. Declared as too weak for battle, Phos is tasked with creating an encyclopedia logging new information. Despite this, as well as their immaturity and clumsiness, Phosphophyllite desires to enter the battlefield in order to be acknowledged by their peers and prove their worth. Phosphophyllite wears a standard winter uniform and black shoes without socks, occasionally with long black gloves.
Phosphophyllite has mint-green features known by the Gems and the Admirabilis as the Lunarians' favorite color. Their hair is short, originally just beneath the ears. Over the course of the story, parts of their body are replaced with other gems and metals. They lose their original legs when Ventricosus attempts to trade them with the Lunarians for her brother. After a failed negotiation with the Lunarians, Ventricosus changes her mind and gifts them parts of her brother's agatized shell as a replacement, which gave them mobility unbeknownst to any Gems. Initially, Phos is a young overconfident, clumsy and naïve Gem, who is the only one capable of getting away with talking back to Sensei. Many gems describe them as “lazy” and “useless” due to their fragility and incompetence, although Phos does display a drive to help Sensei and the others that’s only held back by their low hardness. Once gaining new legs, they become more capable, but not as much as they wished.
Prompt
Land of the Lustrous is set in a far, distant future where the Earth had been struck six times by meteorites, ravaging it in the process. All of the remaining land was reduced to a single coast, and nearly all life was destroyed. Over vast periods, a new race of sentient lifeforms emerged: immortal humanoids embodied by gemstones known as the Lustrous. Phosphophyllite (Phos) is weak (with one of the lowest hardnesses) and considered useless by their peers since they are too brittle to fight. Phos asks their aloof but wise colleague Cinnabar for help after they receive an assignment to create a natural history encyclopedia, thus beginning their friendship and personal growth. Meanwhile, the twenty-eight Lustrous led by their master, Kongo, are fighting to defend themselves against a celestial humanoid race called the Lunarians (Moon people), who inhabit the Moon and invade Earth every few days to take advantage of their luxury value while seeking to harvest the Lustrous' bodies for decorations.
