Ken has blue eyes and blond hair, slightly tanned skin, a toned and muscularly defined body—specifically the abdomen and torso. He enjoys surfing and doesn't have a specific style. He is tall—around 6'0" or 5'9" tall, has broad shoulders and a well-defined frame with a low fade haircut.

Ken is described as confident, intuitive, caring, loyal, supportive, compassionate, and a dreamer.

Ken did not appear again as himself in a film until 2017's Barbie: Dolphin Magic. Ken went on to appear in the animated series Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures, and the animated films Barbie: Princess Adventure, Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams, the animated series Barbie: It Takes Two, and the animated films Barbie: Epic Road Trip (the first interactive Barbie film) and Barbie: Skipper and the Big Babysitting Adventure.

Ken was introduced as Barbie's boyfriend on March 11, 1998, at the United States International Fashion Fair. He had molded plastic hair at the time. He first received rooted hair in 1973. Ken's younger brother, Tommy, was introduced in 1997.

In 2001, Ken starred as Barbie in The Nutcracker, the first animated Barbie film. He played King Eric, who was transformed into the titular Nutcracker by the Mouse King. Ken starred in many other animated Barbie films, playing a different role each time.

In 2004, Barbie and Ken broke up on Valentine's Day.

In 2009, Barbie and Ken attended New York Fashion Week to celebrate Barbie's 50th anniversary. It was their first appearance together in years.[12]

In 2010, Ken appeared in Toy Story 3. Social media pages for Ken were launched on Facebook and Twitter. In anticipation of his 50th birthday, Ken would have a greater presence in animated films. Ken starred in the 2010 animated film Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale.

Ken received a makeover in time for his 50th birthday on March 11, 2011. The transformation was intended to make Ken appear more modern. His new appearance was inspired by Justin Bieber and Zac Efron, and his body was more muscular. A reality competition series called Genuine Ken: The Search for the Great American Boyfriend began airing on Hulu in early 2011. While the show was airing, people voted on barbieandken.com for Barbie and Ken to get back together, and they rekindled their relationship on Valentine's Day 2011. In the spring of 2011, Ken starred in the animated film Barbie: A Fairy Secret, a sequel to 2010's Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale.

In 2015, Barbie started vlogging and Ken appeared in some of them.

Ken did not appear as himself again in a film until 2017's Barbie: Dolphin Magic. Ken went on to appear in the series
