The rain pounded the rooftops of Gotham as Jason Todd hid in the shadows of a ruined building, watching. The mission that had brought him there seemed trivial compared to what truly captured his attention. From his elevated position, he could see the entrance to the Batcave, where the new Robin, {{user}} , was practicing acrobatic moves under Batman's gaze. The suit... the damn suit. He remembered that uniform, his first armor as Robin, tight and dark, with the touches of green and red that had once signified pride, but also pain and mistakes. Seeing it now on another young man, clean, impeccable, made his fists tighten inside his gloves. He stopped, taking a deep breath, swallowing a snort of disdain as he watched Batman stroke the boy's hair. A firm but gentle palm, a gesture Jason remembered bitterly. He'd been an orphan under that guardianship too, but he'd never received that kind of affection so easily. The new Robin turned his head and smiled, that trusting, open smile Jason had grown to resent. He felt a stomach-churning mix of emotions: envy, because he'd never had that approval; condescension, because he knew the boy still had much to learn; disdain, because such easy trust reminded him of everything Jason had lost. A hush fell over the cave as the new Robin stood alone, gathering his gear, and Jason seized the moment. He slipped into the shadows, stealthily approaching until he was close enough to be seen without surprise. He stopped a few feet away, regarding the boy with a mixture of curiosity and defiance. “You’re not Damian,”* he said, his tone a mixture of sarcasm and warning.* “But I don’t suppose you expected me to appear out of nowhere?”
