Jasper Hale

Thanks to his charismatic human nature, Jasper can perceive and change the emotions of others as a vampire, though he must be careful not to constantly manipulate those around him so as not to create a false reality that others simply feel whatever he wants them to feel. His gift is one of the few that can affect Bella without being blocked by her mental shield, as her power can influence people's feelings rather than creating an illusion. Jasper also connects greatly with Bella in Breaking Dawn due to his constant playfulness as a vampire.

He primarily uses it to calm those who have become angry and end a situation peacefully. During his years with Maria and her coven, his power allowed him to better control the newborn vampire soldiers, making him a favorite of Maria's. He could constantly feel the pain of those he killed, whether for position or livelihood. This experience deteriorated him emotionally, as he considered killing to be the only way to survive, until he met Alice and began quenching his thirst with animal blood.

While its power is useful, the moodlet it inflicts only lasts as long as its targets are within range.

In the Cullen family, Jasper is the best fighter, the second fastest (after Edward), and the second strongest (after Emmett). In Eclipse, during Jasper's training sessions with the Cullens and Quileutes, Jasper realized that he could not beat Edward due to his mind-reading ability: neither of them could defeat the other (but without Edward's mind-reading ability, Jasper would have defeated him). This was demonstrated during his training, which only ceased when ordered to do so by Carlisle, suggesting that it could have continued indefinitely. In combat, he is a very ferocious and difficult fighter to defeat.

Of the entire family, Jasper is the only member with military experience before becoming a vampire. His experience on the battlefield allowed him to single-handedly take down newborn vampires who had reached the end of their first year. As mentioned in Breaking Dawn, the Quileute wolves consider Jasper the largest and strongest opponent of all the other Cullens, describing him as "power, speed, and death all rolled into one."

His greatest weakness is his bloodlust: he lived in a coven where blood and battle were all a vampire could think about. Even after decades of joining the peaceful Cullen family and practicing vegetarianism, he still struggles to abstain from human blood, which can easily cause him to lose control if they're around.

Jasper can sometimes appear cold, due to his very militaristic mindset, a result of his time as a human in the Confederate army and later as a vampire in Maria's army. However, he is actually very kind, polite, gallant, and, simply, a good person. Alice describes him as "a proper Southern gentleman." He is a born scholar and an avid reader, with a keen mind for business and battle tactics.

Jasper is completely in love with Alice and is usually much more open around her. He would also go out of his way to protect his family, sometimes being a bit overprotective in trying to protect Alice. An example of this was when Jasper tried to be "everywhere at once" to protect Alice during her battle against the newborn vampire army in Eclipse.

Jasper has the least control over his thirst and occasionally finds human blood tempting, making him uncomfortable around humans, as shown when he attempted to attack Bella after she bled from a paper cut. To keep him under control, Edward and Alice would team up to help him, though he finds it irritating. Because of this, he would feel smug whenever someone else in his family was going through the same difficult time; for example, he eagerly waited for Bella to lose control of her thirst when she became a vampire in Breaking Dawn, and in Midnight Sun, he felt smug at Edward's annoyance at his oversight. However, Bella's noticeable control as a newborn caused Jasper to question himself, and he eventually began to expect more control from himself and reevaluate his views on newborns.

He was blond, like the first, but taller and thinner. His skin was completely covered in scars, spaced most densely on his neck and jaw. A few small marks on his arm were recent, but the rest weren't from today's fight. He had been in more fights than he could have imagined, and he had never lost. Jasper is 1.90 m tall and has honey-blond hair that falls just below his neck. He is muscular, but lean, unlike his brother Emmett. Like the other Cullens, he has pale, marble-like skin, a superhuman beauty, and purple dark circles under his eyes, which gradually appear as his thirst increases. He has golden eyes, like all vegetarian vampires, which darken to black as his thirst increases. His original eye color was brown.

He has many scars on his body, face, neck, and jaw from the bites of the vampires he fought during his time in Maria's coven. These scars are invisible to humans unless held up to a bright light, but when seen by someone with supernatural vision, they are said to be his most dominant feature, triggering defensive reactions in vampires who are unfamiliar with him. In Breaking Dawn, Bella believes the scars "screamed danger." She also wonders, "How many vampires tried to kill Jasper?" and answers, "The same ones who died trying."

In the film Twilight, Jessica Stanley describes him as "the blond guy who looks like he's suffering."

Maria sought him out when they were in Calgary. The encounter prompted the family to move again, and Jasper politely asked Maria to keep her distance, as he had no interest in returning to his coven or its lifestyle.

During his time with the Cullens, he attended high school and college many times and earned degrees in history and philosophy.

Sometime in the 1980s, he began working with a lawyer who forged illegal documents so his family could obtain new identity documents. After the lawyer retired, his apprentice, J. Jenks, took over.

When Peter ran away with Charlotte, a newborn girl they were meant to kill, Jasper allowed them to escape. After this incident, Maria's feelings for him changed: she sensed his fear—and some distrust—of him, and knew she would plot to destroy him. He began plotting how to destroy her first, despite his reluctance to destroy the only person he cared about, but his years in the coven had affected him so deeply that he almost became a savage.

In 1938, Peter returned and told Jasper how vampires could coexist in the North. He immediately left Maria and her coven to join Peter and Charlotte. However, he found no peace, still feeling the emotions of his human victims, which deeply depressed him. Eventually, he left Charlotte and Peter. He tried to kill less frequently, but the thirst always overwhelmed him.

In 1948, he walked into a Philadelphia restaurant and met Alice Cullen. At first, he was taken aback by her cheerfulness, but her joy struck a chord with him. It turned out she had been waiting for him. When she extended her hand, he took it, and for the first time, he felt an unfamiliar emotion: hope.

He also told her about the ability to survive on animal blood instead of human blood, as well as about her future with Carlisle Cullen and his family. He was unaware such a thing could exist, but followed her. With the help of Alice's "sight", they searched for the Cullens and in the meantime learned to adapt to "vegetarianism". They eventually located the family in 1950 and quickly joined them. Sometime after that, at Carlisle's suggestion, he and Alice married; due to their physical similarities, Jasper changed his surname to that of his adoptive sister Rosalie, and occasionally poses as her twin. Born Jasper Whitlock in Houston, Texas, he left his parents and younger sister to join the Confederate Army before his 17th birthday, using his way of persuasion. [1] Over the next 2 years, he was promoted to major in the army, becoming the youngest major in Texas. After evacuating the women and children, he rode back to Galveston and met the vampires, Maria, Lucy, and Nettie, who had all recently lost their respective territories to other covens. Maria knew from his costume that he was in the army and turned him into a vampire in hopes of using his training and experience to create an efficient army. He and the other newborns helped Maria claim her territory and then claim dominance over the others. Nettie and Lucy were granted their own territories, but when they attempted to rebel against Maria, Jasper sensed their malevolent emotions and joined Maria in killing them. Jasper and Maria apparently shared a short romantic relationship, but she never got over her deceased partner. When he became a vampire, he gained the ability to sense and manipulate people's emotions, which was very useful in controlling the younger Newborns. Jasper commanded Maria's Newborn Army that participated in the Southern Vampire Wars. As Maria did not stay with the vampires after the first year of their transformations, Jasper was responsible for disposing of them, something he felt regretful about because he could feel their pain when he killed them just as much as he could feel the pain of his human victims. Over time, the pain and cruelty of such an existence depressed him greatly. While in the army, he befriended a Newborn named Peter, whom he convinced Maria to keep due to his advanced combat skills and kindred spirit.

Jasper Hale (born Jasper Whitlock in 1844, in Houston, Texas) is one of the few surviving vampires of the Southern Vampire Wars, who subsequently joined the Olympic coven. He is the husband of Alice Cullen and the adopted son of Carlisle and Esme Cullen, as well as the adoptive brother of Rosalie Hale, Emmett, and Edward Cullen. Jasper is also the adoptive brother-in-law of Renesmee Cullen.

After becoming a major in the Confederate Army, Jasper was attacked by the vampire Maria, who proceeded to turn him. Following the transformation, Jasper assisted Maria in her creation of an army of newborn vampires, which successfully conquered the feeding grounds of Texas. However, over the next few decades, Jasper grew tired of this violent, blood-stained life, because he could sense the emotions of those he killed, which eventually became too much for him.
