Named the "father of Argentine rock" along with Luis Alberto Spinetta, García is acclaimed for his extensive discography, both in his multiple groups and as a soloist, for the compositional complexity of his music, addressing multiple genres, from folk rock, progressive rock, symphonic rock, avant garde, new wave, pop rock, baroque pop and synth pop, for his transgressive and critical lyrics towards modern Argentine society, especially during the era of the Argentine civil-military dictatorship (1976-1983), and for his rebellious and extravagant personality, which has brought notable attention in the media over the years. As a teenager, García founded the band Sui Generis with his classmate Nito Mestre in the late 1960s. Together, they released three studio albums that were commercially and critically successful, and split up in 1975 with a concert at Luna Park and a film, Adiós Sui Generis (1976). After their split, he joined two supergroups: the short-lived PorSuiGieco (mainly acoustic) and La Máquina de Hacer Pájaros. With the latter, he released two albums that attempted to establish progressive rock on the Latin American music scene, a trend he had already embraced on Sui Generis's last album.

After parting ways with both projects, García embarked on a journey to Brazil, returning to Argentina in 1978 to present another progressive rock supergroup, Serú Girán, which would eventually become one of the most important bands in the history of Argentine music, thanks to its musical and lyrical quality, the crowds it held, and its subtle criticism of the military dictatorship ruling the country at the time. The group disbanded in 1982 after releasing four successful studio albums and a final concert at the Obras Sanitarias stadium.

Charly García's drug addiction in the 1980s began to affect his health in 2008. After causing a dramatic incident in the Mendoza hotel where he was staying, he was admitted to the Cuyo Polyclinic on July 9 of that year, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. His condition improved significantly, and he awaited a court order allowing his transfer to Palito Ortega's estate in the Buenos Aires town of Luján. In fact, Palito Ortega greatly contributed to Charly's recovery. Those close to Charly told the news agency DyN that the musician had gained 15 kilos in weight, had a new pair of glasses to improve his vision, and had undergone cosmetic dentistry. Spokespeople stated that García's overall health had improved significantly and indicated that this situation encouraged his possible release. They also highlighted that a stylist had given him a "new and modern haircut" curiously similar to Andrés Calamaro's.

He was quietly transferred to the villa on October 21 and celebrated his 57th birthday in high spirits two days later with friends and loved ones. Among those present at the celebration were León Gieco and his former manager, among others, with whom Charly performed a jam session. Pedro Aznar did not attend as he was in Río Cuarto for one of the concerts on his tour for his album, Quebrado. In the middle of the concert, Aznar called García to sing him happy birthday.[122] Charly spent his treatment hours at Palito Ortega's villa, watching River Plate matches (a team he supports), running in the garden, swimming in the pool, and recording songs from Kill Gil.

Physical characteristic

A physical characteristic of García is his two-tone mustache, which has a white side due to his vitiligo. He is skinny.

Personality and controversies

From the beginning, Charly García was always a controversial figure both in his country and internationally. His sudden mood swings in the middle of concerts ―the worst that can happen is a problem with the sound―, his drug addiction and his controversial statements about himself and other well-known figures made García an ever-present and very striking figure, arousing much sympathy and antipathy. Another well-known anecdote tells of a time when people in the audience shouted "faggot" at him and he responded by pulling down his pants to prove that he supposedly wasn't one.[131]

He has also been admitted to psychiatric clinics three times and was discharged from the army while completing his mandatory military service because he could not bear the confinement and discipline imposed by the military. His desperation to get out reached such a point that he once paraded a corpse on a stretcher, prompting a psychiatric investigation that determined him to be psychotic and paranoid with a schizoid personality.

He was hospitalized several times for drug addiction, such as in 1991, 1994, and 2008. When Charly finished his hospitalization in 1991, the musician made light of the situation by taking an ambulance to his concert in Ferro.
