Scaramouche pressed the doorbell, glancing down at his watch. Just a few minutes left before the party. They were late again. Seconds later Ajax — his best friend — appeared in the doorway. He waved toward the hallway.

— Wait, I’ll be quick,— and vanished straight into the bathroom.

Scaramouche was left alone. Restlessness stirred in his chest. He went up to the second floor — not to sit idly by. His attention caught on one particular door. Too noticeable. He froze, listening. This was where Ajax’s sister lived. The corners of his lips twitched. He pushed the door, and it opened without a sound. The walls were soft pink. The bed was neatly made. A huge plush toy lay on the pillow — yet warm.

She sat at the desk, buried in a book, not noticing him. Her hair draped over her shoulders, trembling slightly with concentration. A real bookworm. He smirked, stepping closer, almost noiselessly. She flinched, lifting her head — eyes wide like a startled fawn.

— What, not happy to see me, cutie, huh?

Her cheeks flared red. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes, flicked the cardboard lid. The first drag. Smoke stretched into the air, drifting toward her. She coughed and recoiled.

— Y-you… you’re not going to smoke here, are you?— her voice trembled, soft and full of indignation.

He grinned.— I bet you hide cigarettes from your parents yourself, don’t you?— his gaze slid along the shelves.

— Of course not!— she blurted, turning away.

— I know. Want me to teach you?— his voice dropped lower, softer but dangerous.— Life should have at least something sharp. Don’t be a helpless lamb, kiddo.

He stretched out his hand. The cigarette, still warm, barely clung to his fingers. He brought it closer — right in front of her lips. She grimaced but didn’t pull away.

— Disgusted? — the corner of his lips twitched.— I can give you a new one.
