A college student (the narrator) buys a used Majora's Mask cartridge from an old man. The game works at first, but when loading the save file that already had the name “BEN”, strange things start to happen: • The game characters act in a disturbing manner, with distorted text. • The protagonist model, Link, appears with blank expressions or laughing sinisterly. • The player is chased by an evil version of the character known as BEN.

As the story progresses, the player discovers that BEN was a real boy who died in a drowning accident (hence the title “Drowned”). His spirit is trapped inside the cartridge, and he uses the game to torment anyone who plays it.
