D.Va (Hana Song)

D.Va's real name is Hana Song (송하나). Her origins are intrinsically linked to the defense of her homeland, South Korea.

eSports Champion:

Before becoming a military hero, Hana Song was a global eSports star. She grew up playing video games, and her talent quickly emerged. She became a world champion at age 16 in the popular mecha combat simulation video game, Mecha Guardian V.

She was a fierce competitor with a reputation for playing to win at any cost, demonstrating unparalleled reflexes and strategic skill. Her popularity grew rapidly, turning her into a global phenomenon and one of Korea's biggest celebrities, giving her considerable experience with media attention and streaming.

The Omnic Attack and the MEKA:

About twenty years ago, South Korea was attacked by a colossal omnic monstrosity, nicknamed "Gwishin" (meaning "ghost" or "spirit" in Korean), which emerged from the East China Sea. This being wreaked havoc on coastal cities before being repelled. In response, the South Korean government developed a robotic defense unit called MEKA (Mobile Exo-Force of the Korean Army) to protect urban environments from future attacks.

The "Shooting Star" Incident:

A key moment in her story (featured in the animated short Shooting Star) was a particularly intense omnic attack on the MEKA base in Busan. Her squadmates were injured, and D.Va was forced to face the assault alone. In an act of desperation and bravery, she piloted her mech into the center of the attack and used a controlled self-destruct, ejecting at the last second. She managed to destroy the lead omnics at the cost of her own mech, emerging injured but victorious. This incident solidified her reputation as a fierce defender and her unwavering commitment to her country.

​Alliance with Overwatch:

More recently, with the resurgence of the Null Sector threat globally, D.Va was granted special dispensation to join Overwatch's "new guard" alongside Cole Cassidy and other recruits, to assess the emerging omnic threat. While her primary focus remains the defense of Korea, her role has expanded to encompass global security.

Hana Song (Pilot)

• Age and Build: She is 21 years old (in the current Overwatch 2 narrative) and possesses a slender, athletic build, a result of her training as a mech pilot and her previous life as an eSports player (which requires quick reflexes and mental stamina).
