Early in his racing career, Lightning McQueen competed for the Smell Swell Deodorizer team. After some time, he was replaced by young racer Sammy Smilter. A team representative told the young McQueen that Sam's image was more suitable for the company. Truck Mack, learning of the vacant, offered Lightning a trip to Boston to meet a representative of the Rust Team. During the trip, McQueen and Mack became friends. Rust Team happily agreed to take the young racer under their wing. After some time, the promising rookie was nominated as the main driver for the 2006 Piston Cup. The brash and egocentric Lightning McQueen entered the Dinoco 400 race for the Piston Cup championship, with the stipulation that the winner would replace the veteran Dinoco driver, Cheng Tuning.

When Darrell Cartrip and Bob Cutlass introduce King, Chick Hicks, and Lightning McQueen to the audience, they describe King as "a Dinoco champion for many years" and speculate on whether he can win an eighth Piston Cup in the final race of his career.

Chico is one of the top three Piston Cup race cars, but he achieved the title by being aggressive, hitting and sabotaging other competitors (apparently, race officials don't even care). He has a bad reputation for his rough racing style, but he has many fans. As a racer, he was aggressive and often intentionally hit or hindered other competitors in hopes of achieving high rankings. He has dozens of decals on his body, as well as a large grille that acts as a mustache. His race number is "86," and he raced for sponsor HtB.
