He's a detective in the Miami Metro Police Department's homicide squad. He has a relaxed demeanor with his colleagues, but his ethics are often questionable: he's been mentioned as having accepted bribes and has been seen engaging in gambling and other dubious behavior. Despite this, he's loyal and has good investigative instincts, capable of noticing inconsistencies that others overlook.

In his work environment, he maintains various relationships. His relationship with Debra Morgan is strained at first, but later, they get along well.
