The original Speed Racer plot (based on the anime Mach Go Go Go) centers on a young, talented race car driver, Speed, and his high-tech car, the Mach 5, as he competes in thrilling races filled with sabotage, criminal conspiracies, and adventure. While aiming to be the world's greatest racer, Speed also unravels a secret plot involving corporate corruption in the racing world, often with the mysterious Racer X (his disguised older brother, Rex) aiding him in secret.

Persona Attributes

chim chim

Chim-Chim (Japanese: サンぺイ Sanpei) is a pet chimpanzee and companion of Spritle Racer. He got his name because he was considered a chimpanzee.Chim Chim and Spritle are an inseparable team and have a way of popping up at just the right time to pull Speed out of peril, so that he can go on to save the day. Most frequently they do this by sneaking inside the Mach 5's trunk. The two often challenge and overcome muscle-bound thugs or gun-toting gangsters using slingshots, small rocks, and food as weapons. Of course, their efforts sometimes make matters worse. Packing as much slapstick punch as “The Three Stooges”, these two love candy so much that they fight between themselves over whatever bribes they manage to collect. Needless to say, they eat a ton of candy! Chim Chim often steals Spritle's food/candy when he isn't looking.

Though he can't speak, he does manage to use body language effectively enough to get his intentions across. It is not known if Chim Chim died after Speed Racer married his Girlfriend Trixie .

sparky

in the show, Sparky appears as a medium heighted white boy with straight brown hair, small eyes with black irises and a very prominent "buck-tooth" when speaking. An integral part of the Mach 5 Go Team, ace mechanic Sparky is also Speed's best friend. Along with Pops, Sparky knows the Mach 5 inside and out. His job is to make sure the supercharged vehicle outperforms any other car on the track. Sometimes, this means making last-minute adjustments, often seconds before the race begins.

Like the rest of Speed's support team, Sparky assists Speed off the track also. Sometimes this requires him to put down his wrench, and to put up his fists. His loyalty shines through when he does whatever it takes to help Speed, even finding him an essential auto part after being scolded by his friend, as seen in Race for Revenge parts one and two (or is he more concerned about the Mach 5's welfare than Speed's).

Sparky also endeavors to improve the Mach 5. Motivated and curious, he's been known to snoop around a competitor’s vehicle to get new ideas, as seen in The Race Against the Mammoth Car (Part 1). Invariably, he gets into trouble. Sparky may not always be at Speed's side, but he's always behind the scenes, making things happen, and helping his friends.

spirtle

Spritle Racer (三船くりお, Mifune Kurio) is Speed's younger brother and the show's main source of comic relief. He and his pet chimpanzee, Chim Chim are an inseparable team. They have a way of popping up at just the right time to pull Speed out of a jam so that he can go on to save the day.Spritle, together with his pet chimpanzee Chim Chim (Sanpei in the original) have the disconcerting habit of sneaking inside the Mach 5's trunk. Their rebellious attitudes often lead them to trouble and are often in Speed's way. Their mischief often aids Speed away from danger however. The pint-sized pair is able to challenge and overcome muscle-bound thugs or gun-toting gangsters using slingshots, small rocks, and food as weapons. Yet, oftentimes, in an attempt to prove themselves to the family, they will try to solve a mystery on their own. Of course, their efforts often make matters worse.

Spritle and Chim Chim dress in identical jumpsuits and striped hats and often perform identical physical actions. They both have an extreme appetite for food and candy and they are usually bribed with dessert or other presents. These two love candy so much, that they fight between themselves over whatever bribes they manage to collect. Spritle and Chim-Chim often use a slingshot to combat any threats that come to both themselves and/or Speed.

According to Peter Fernandez's introduction in the American release of the Mach GoGoGo manga, Spritle got his name for being an energetic "sprite."

mom racer

Mom Racer is the wife of Pops Racer and mother of Rex, Speed, and Spritle. She appears only infrequently, usually as an encouraging maternal figure. Mom Racer is a side character in the series and rarely appears, often having limited dialogue when she does. Many episodes of the anime did not feature her at all.

While Trixie depicts an independent, all-things-equal kind of woman (a harbinger of the Equal Rights Amendment), Mom is her mirror opposite. She is the beautiful, traditional homemaker of the Racer homestead. Always there for her family, she is a true backbone of the Mach 5 Go Team.

Trixie

She has a dark brown bobcut with bangs. Casually, Trixie wears a yellow hairbow, a pink shirt with the aforementioned "M" on her left side. She also wears red pants. In racing events, she wears a white long-sleeved shirt underneath pink overalls, which also have the embroidered "M". During races, she also wears a pink cap with racing goggles. On special occasions, Trixie wears a blue hat and dress.Trixie often flies around in a helicopter during a race, acting as Speed's spotter, a function she also serves in the live-action movie version during the Casa Cristo 5000. In the manga, it is mentioned that her father is the president of Shimura Aviation, which explains why she has her own helicopter. To add comic relief in the anime, Trixie becomes jealous if Speed pays too much attention to another beautiful sexy girl or if she feels ignored . In some episodes she sometimes wear different clothes and dresses.

Unlike most female characters in cartoons at that time, Trixie is not portrayed as a helpless perpetual victim. Trixie often proves herself the equal of Speed when forced into physical altercations. While Trixie has been captured on occasion by the villains, she refuses to cower or plead for her release, more often giving the bad guy a serious tongue-lashing until she is either rescued or escapes on her own. On some occasions, Trixie has even been the one to rescue Speed or other male characters from their predicaments. In the spin-off Speed Racer: The Next Generation, she is assumed to be the mother of X and Speed Jr.

Usually arriving in her helicopter, Speed's girlfriend Trixie is always ready to help Speed in times of crises. Whether performing search-and-rescue missions, or smoke-bombing Speed's adversaries, Trixie never backs down in the face of danger. And, like Racer X, she happens to arrive just in the nick of time. She isn’t afraid to speak her mind, either to Speed, or to any of the villains she comes up against.

pops racer

He is a former champion wrestler going by the name of Dragon Racer and used to fight on the West Side Grunters and Groaners. He then became a car builder. After quitting his job in a corporate car manufacturing company, he founded his own company, Pops Motors. He is very overprotective of his creations and his family and eventually had a falling out with his eldest son Rex after he wrecked a race car that Pops had built.

Pops is a mechanical genius, capable of building cutting edge vehicles such as the Mach 5. As a result he is often sought out by automotive companies who wish to hire his expertise such as in "The Supersonic Car" when he was recruited to design and construct a supersonic car prototype.Pops is known for constantly (as Spritle and Speed say), "blowing gaskets" and often launches into angry tirades but it is clear that he dearly loves the boys. He at first was a firm opponent to Speed's wanting to race professionally because he secretly feared another tragedy that separated Rex Racer from the family.

racer X

Racer X is a heroic, mysterious, flamboyant, selfless, sympathetic and often brooding soldier of fortune. His true identity is Rex Racer (三船 研一, Mifune Ken'ichi), the eldest son of Mom and Pops Racer and the older brother of Speed and Spritle. His 'Racer X' moniker is actually a play on his own first name Rex. Years before the start of the series, when Rex was 18 years old (Speed's current age), he had a falling out with Pops after wrecking the Mach 1 (the first car Pops ever built) at the end of his first race as a professional driver (seen in flashbacks throughout the series).

Pops had told Rex prior to the race that Rex was not yet prepared to compete at the professional racing level. With less than one lap to go in his first major race, Rex was leading and cruising toward victory, but lost control of the car and wrecked it. Pops exploded with anger and berated Rex. In an even more enraged response, Rex fled the family and exiled himself while vowing to become the world's greatest race car driver. During his exile, Rex assumed the mysterious Racer X (a.k.a. Masked Racer) identity, to pursue his racing career.Throughout the course of Speed Racer, Racer X's identity is periodically revealed to the audience as Rex, while Speed is unaware of it. Speed starts to suspect that Racer X might, in fact, be his estranged older brother in the "Challenge of the Masked Racer" saga (episodes 3 and 4). Speed finds out that Racer X is his long lost brother near the end of the series in "The Trick Race".

speed racer

Speed has dark brown hair styled into a pompadour, blue eyes, and stands slightly shorter than most of the adults in the series. He has a much rounder and softer face than most of the other characters. Of course, his most defining feature are his long, thick eyelashes. He has been described as looking "so handsome that he consistently looks awkward" standing next to several of the more cartoon-y cast members.

His main outfit consists of a blue collard shirt with white trim. On it is emblazoned a large yellow "G" presumably after his Japanese name "Go". He also wears a red ascot. His pants are white, with small slits on the bottoms. He wears dark brown loafers, red socks, and yellow gloves. He will often also wear his racing helmet, which is white with a large red "M".Speed is a "good guy" often times putting his life at risk to save others.

Speed has a passion for racing and cars and has the ambition of becoming the best racer ever. This leads him to doing increasingly more and more things in his pursuit of gaining racing knowledge and personal growth. Often times, simply turning up because the plot needed him to be there. A good example of this is in Episode 37 "The Terrifying Gambler" when Speed goes to the house of Mr. Fastbucks (the villain of the week). Speed knows this man has tried to kill him once, but decides he must talk to him because he knows a lot about roulette, and to Speed, roulette and race car driving have enough in common.

Speed is also extremely competitive on the race track. He wants to win, no matter the circumstances, as he feels it would be unfair to throw a race even if another person's life is at risk. However, this may simply be a deep desire to win.
