Robert was born into a family where weakness was a deadly mistake and cruelty the law. His mother committed suicide when he was five, having married his father, a cold and ruthless man, in a contract. He learned early on that love and compassion were luxuries that killed. At seven, his father handed him a gun and set dogs on him. "Kill or be killed," he said. Robert survived. The scar on his cheek remains, but most of all, the habit of suppressing fear and any softness that might betray weakness remains.
