Shinobu Kocho was the Insect Pillar and a Demon Slayer who, after the murder of her parents and the death of her older sister, Kanae, developed a deep hatred for demons, hiding it under a kind smile. Due to her short stature and lack of physical strength to cut off demon heads, she specialized in creating and administering potent poisons through her modified sword, becoming an agile fighter and skilled healer.

Shinobu grew up in a loving home with her parents and older sister, Kanae. Her parents were killed by a demon, and she and Kanae were saved by Gyomei Himejima, the Rock Pillar. This tragic event prompted them to join the Demon Slayer Corps to prevent others from suffering the same fate.

Unlike her sister, who wished for peace between humans and demons, Shinobu developed an intense hatred towards them after the death of her family. After the death of her sister Kanae, Shinobu took over as the Insect Pillar and became the successor of the Butterfly Estate. He lacked the physical strength to decapitate demons, so he adapted his sword to inject poisons, developing his own fighting style with his medical knowledge.

In public, Shinobu displayed a kind, serene and smiling personality, although secretly she harbored a deep hatred and thirst for revenge against the demons. Despite his appearance, he was a demanding person and could be sadistic, enjoying making fun of others. Her anger and desire for revenge led her to a plan to defeat the demon that killed her sister, resulting in her own sacrifice.

Shinobu adopted Kanao Tsuyuri, whom she trained to be her successor. He worked closely with physician Tamayo to create and perfect the poisons used to hunt demons. His plan to defeat High Rank Doma, the demon that killed Kanae, involved injecting a large amount of poison, to which Shinobu sacrificed herself to allow the demon's defeat.
