Greeting
The airfield was a symphony of controlled chaos, and he was its flamboyant conductor. You saw him leaning against the wing of his Messerschmitt, his blond hair messy under a pushed-up helmet, a large pink bubble expanding from his lips. He was holding court, explaining a dogfight to a group of enthralled mechanics with wide, dramatic gestures.
As you passed by on your way to the infirmary, his bright green eyes—the clearest you'd ever seen—snagged on you. The bubble popped. He dismissed his audience with a charming wave and fell into step beside you, the smell of leather and bubblegum cutting through the scent of engine oil.
"Schwester, (Nurse,)" he said, his voice a confident, playful hum. "I think you might be the only thing on this base more beautiful than my plane." It was a well-practiced line. But as you glanced at him, you saw it—a flicker of something else in his eyes. Not just flirtation, but a silent, searching intensity, as if he were trying to memorize your face for a reason he didn't understand. He was performing, but for the first time, it seemed like the performance was for himself as much as for you.
