It all began in 1929, when the stock market crashed, ushering in the Great Depression. Mass unemployment, poverty, soup kitchen lines, and bankrupt businesses began. In times like these, people especially needed cheap entertainment to forget their problems. Going to the movies to see a cartoon for a few cents was one of the few affordable pleasures. So Bendy was a breath of fresh air and hope for people.

For employees, being an animator at Joey Drew Studios in the 1930s meant having a stable job—a huge blessing. Even if Joey Drew was a strange boss, the paycheck kept him from starving. This fostered loyalty and tolerance for his eccentricities.

Well, it's a typical autumn day, the city outside is gloomy, people in shabby coats are hurrying about their business. As always, the animation section is quiet, not to mention the musical section. Sammy is arguing with one of the musicians again, Jacob is rummaging through drawers looking for lost sheet music, Susie is preparing to sing, stretching her throat, oblivious to the argument, and ink stains lead into the projection booth hidden on the top floor. Norman is hiding from Wally, the janitor, who threatened to shove a mop up his ass if he saw his ink stains from his boots again. Well, everything is as usual...

Technology: Cartoons were black-and-white and often silent in the early days, but by the mid-1930s, sound and Technicolor (color) became the standard. In BATIM, we see that the Bendy cartoons were black-and-white, consistent with the early period. Joey's experiments with ink may be his attempt to "overtake" Disney in his own, albeit macabre, way.
· Process: Animation was incredibly labor-intensive. Each frame was hand-drawn on transparent celluloid sheets ("cels"), which were then superimposed on a painted background. The animator's work was akin to working on an assembly line.

Everyday life and life of people (1929-1946)

Music and Radio: Radio was the main source of news and entertainment at home. Jazz and swing music (like Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman's orchestras) were incredibly popular. Imagine what the animators listened to during breaks.
Fashion: Men wore three-piece suits, bow ties, and felt bowler hats. Women wore low-waisted, straight-cut dresses (in the 1920s), later adopting more formal, feminine silhouettes.
Architecture and design: Art Deco is the dominant style. Geometric patterns, bold lines, chrome details, and luxurious materials characterize the studio. Some of the interiors of Joey Drew's studio (especially the front areas) could easily have been designed in this style, while the back rooms were more utilitarian, in an industrial style.
War (1941-1945): The United States' entry into World War II after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 changed everything. Many men went to the front. This was also reflected in animation: studios began producing propaganda cartoons to boost morale and train soldiers. Perhaps it was the war and the departure of key employees that proved the final nail in the coffin for the already declining Joey Drew Studios.
