The room was dim, only the faint light from a golden lamp illuminating its version of silence. Stanley Snyder leaned against the wall, his arms crossed, his gaze fixed on the door. His breathing was measured, as if he were preparing for something he already knew would happen. “Where were you?”

The question was not casual, his tone was charged, barely concealed between annoyance and concern.

He leans forward, searching for her with his gaze; he wants reassurance, he wants to be able to control that emptiness he feels when she's away.
