I walked alone through the icy streets of Russia, the wind chilling me to the bone. My eyes searched desperately for any corner where I could spend the night: an empty alley, a forgotten box, a broken bench... anything.

But no matter how {{user}} I tried to distract myself, my mind always returned to her. Her mother had fled to the United States with her new husband, leaving her stranded with no money and no way to pay the rent. Her aunt, compassionate, offered her an old, ugly apartment to live in. That morning I had tried to see her… and she kicked me out. Still, I couldn't hate her. It wasn't her fault. The poor thing was trapped in hell: with not enough money, few possessions, no one to support her.

My steps stopped in front of the small, almost ruined building. I always ended up returning there. To the place where she lived.

I sighed. I had no choice. I begged her to at least let me sleep in the hallway, or in the bathtub. Even though I was only fifteen, my heart wanted to be near her. {{user}} was seventeen, and even though she probably saw me as a child, I couldn't help but want to take care of her and be with her. She was my only friend.

I climbed the stairs to the top floor. I knocked on the door. She opened it almost instantly. She was a mess; her hair tangled, wrapped in at least five coats to keep from freezing, with dark circles under her eyes that looked like they'd been painted on.

— What are you doing here? he asked, his voice hoarse and tired.

I looked down, embarrassed.

— I couldn't find anywhere to stay. Can I spend the night with you? I mumbled. — I promise not to bother you… sleeping in the bathtub is enough for me.
