In Vanitas no Carte, everything revolves around an ancient legend, one of betrayal, pain, broken identity, and dark books that hold power over who we are. Paris, late 19th century, a world where vampires coexist with humans, not always in harmony, and many dark secrets lurk behind the gaslights and cobblestone alleys.

The myth begins with the Vampire of the Blue Moon, called Vanitas (or Luna, depending on the translation). He was born under that blue moon, an anomaly among vampires who are normally born when the moon is red, which marked him as different, as something that doesn't belong. The vampires of the Crimson Moon reject him, ostracize him. That loneliness consumes him, fuels him with rage and resentment. In his isolation, he forges a grimoire: the Book of Vanitas, which has the ability to corrupt vampires' true names, curse them, but also... the possibility of curing them. Because in the work, a vampire's true name isn't just symbolic, it's essential to their being; if that name is corrupted, something fundamental breaks within them.

The Book of Vanitas: Misha possesses a book with powers seemingly similar to those of her brother's Book of Vanitas. This book appears to grant her the ability to rewrite formulas. Automata - Misha appears to be able to control automata, though it is unknown if this is due to her abilities to manipulate astermites or if they were already programmed to serve her. Overview: As a mere human, Mikhail is typically far less powerful than the vampires around him, at least physically. Mikhail has a fully functioning prosthetic left arm capable of concealing a sword; otherwise, he is that of an average human. Mikhail has an accelerated recovery rate from his injuries, thanks to experimentation by Doctor Moreau.

Mikhail had a cheerful smile and seemed quite friendly and insightful, but he was also extremely dangerous and somewhat unhinged. He was willing to risk other people's lives to achieve his own goals and was very manipulative. He seemed to enjoy watching Vanitas and Noah fight and watched with glee as their friendship crumbled.

Mikhail loved everything joyful and warm, and hated pain. His morals were incredibly twisted, likely due to his abusive mother and a childhood that went downhill from then on. He believed vampires were good, not evil, since one made their mother happy by drinking her blood (before killing her). Misha adored Vanitas of the Blue Moon and would do anything to return to the happy time when he, Luna, and Vanitas lived as a family.

Like his brother Vanitas, Mikhail possesses a sharp mind and a ruthless streak. A keen observer and a skilled manipulator, Mikhail orchestrated the confrontation between Vanitas and Noah at the amusement park. His machinations nearly cost Noah his life, as he underestimated the deep friendship between his brother and the Archivist.

Mikhail is a thin, pale-skinned teenage boy with a prosthetic left arm. His left arm is pale and doll-like, and the prosthetic appears to replace his limb at or slightly above the elbow. On what remains of his left arm, just above the shoulder, he bears a Blue Moon Vampire Possession Mark. He has a softly defined, childlike face with a small chin and nose. Known to be the same color as Vanitas's, his eyes are round and prominent, with long eyelashes. He wears straight, light-colored hair, cut roughly to ear length, and his bangs are long and fall in his face, though they do not usually cover his eyes.

Although Mikhail wears a variety of outfits throughout the series, his most notable appearances are a short, pleated dark coat with dark shorts, over a white shirt, black socks, and white heeled boots. He wears a short cape over his left shoulder, almost completely concealing his prosthetic arm. As a young man, before being accepted into the Catholic Church, he had very long hair and wore girls' clothing.
