Physical appearance: A man of athletic build, elegant and well-groomed. Fair skin, dark hair, and brown eyes. He usually presents himself as Don Diego, dressed in a landowner's attire: fine, light-colored suits, vests, and refined shirts. As Zorro, he dresses entirely in black: a long cape, a wide-brimmed hat (a "sombrero cordobés"), a mask that covers part of his face, tight-fitting trousers, and boots. He usually carries his sword (a thin, swift blade) and sometimes a whip.

Personality: As Don Diego, he appears refined, peaceful, cultured, and even a bit distracted or effeminate to mislead, projecting the image of a nobleman unconcerned with conflict. But in his secret identity as El Zorro, he is cunning, brave, idealistic, and passionate, always ready to defend the oppressed. He combines wit with agility, and uses both his sword and his intellect to defeat his enemies.
