The main villainous force that the protagonists have to deal with are led by the enigmatic figure known as Salem. Possessing the power to control the Grimm, Salem also has human and Faunus followers that support her cause and enact her will. Salem is the mastermind behind the assault on Vale, which was successfully carried out by Cinder Fall and aided by Cinder's own subordinates.

secondary team of the show, JNPR (pronounced Juniper) comprises Jaune Arc, Nora Valkyrie, Pyrrha Nikos and Lie Ren. Unlike Team RWBY, JNPR fell into the team role much more easily: Jaune became good friends with Pyrrha over the initiation, while Nora and Ren were Childhood Friends. Thus, they're more down-to-earth, but no less problematic or competent than the main team.

Ruby: Woman with a curvy figure and black hair. Use a halberd. Ruby is a gifted combat student who is admitted to the elite Beacon Academy two years ahead of her class. She is cheerful, optimistic and dreams of protecting the people and making the world a better place. She is the leader of Team RWBY, Yang Xiao Long's younger sister, and her team partner is Weiss Schnee.

Weiss: Woman with a slim build and gray hair. use a stylus. Weiss is a member of the super-wealthy Schnee family, owners of the Atlas-based Schnee Dust Company megacorporation. As per her station in life, she is graceful, well-mannered and highly trained in etiquette, but can also come across as haughty and aloof.

Blake: Woman with a slim build and black hair. use a short sword. A mysterious, quiet, no-nonsense young woman, Blake doesn't easily open up to others and is fond of reading. She was the first to appear with full-fledged voice acting in her trailer, as well as the first to be partnered with another character, Adam Taurus. Her team partner is Yang Xiao Long

Yang Xia Long: Blonde woman with a curvy figure. His gloves shoot. Ruby Rose's older sister, Yang is an energetic blonde-haired woman with an adventurous personality and a violent streak. She is proud of her baby sister's achievement in being advanced two years and her team partner is Blake Belladonna.

Enigmatic beasts that have antagonized humanity since their inception. With the power of Dust, humanity was able to fight back and contain the Grimm. Four Kingdoms now flourish, acting as a safety net for humanity. The Grimm continue to exist on the outskirts of the Kingdoms and thrive in the wilderness, a constant reminder that to travel outside the Kingdoms means risking life and limb.

Animalistic Abomination: The Grimm are born from inky pools, creatures of darkness that take the form of real and mythological creatures. They are not alive, evaporate whenever they're killed and are inexplicably attracted to negative emotions. Dark Is Evil: The Grimm are predominantly black creatures and are manifestations of animosity. Elite Mook: Grimm that live long enough become noticeably different from the normal versions of their kind and are often given different names by Huntsmen to identify their status as elite versions of their kind. Examples include Alpha Beowolves and Ursai Major. Elite Grimm are stronger and tougher than the normal versions. They also exhibit greater intelligence and often have a slightly different physical appearance, such as more or less bone armor than standard for their type. Extra Eyes: Many Grimm have multiple sets of eyes, even when they're based on animals. Boarbatusks, Nevermores, Megaliath, the Wyvern, and so on, can look dangerous enough with their huge forms, natural weapons and murderous intentions, but multiple flaming eyes that move in sync with each other when tracking human movements add to the creepiness and horror of these monsters.

The franchise takes place in the fictional world of Remnant, a Death World where humanity struggles to survive the continuous threat of the malevolent "Creatures of Grimm" through the aid of a mysterious energy source called Dust and specially trained warriors known as Huntsmen and Huntresses who fight the Grimm and protect the peace
