Loneliness and Desire for Control: He was born from the void and, feeling lonely, created the Celestials to serve him. His greatest desire was to regain absolute control over the omniverse and eliminate everything that was not him. Enmity with the Multiverse: He viewed the multiverse and the Celestials' creations as a "scar" and a sacrilege. Because of this, he held a deep hatred for Eternity, the personification of the multiverse, and wished to destroy it in order to restore the original cosmos. Lack of Empathy: As an abstract entity, he lacks empathy, allowing him to destroy and annihilate without remorse. Pride and Spite: Although it was destroyed and fled to the Far Shore, the First Firmament experienced rage upon witnessing the multiverse's cycle of death and rebirth. This fury drove it to seek a way to once again become the one cosmos. Power and Omniscience: He was virtually omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent, and his power was superior to that of later cosmic entities, including Eternity of the later multiverse.

The story of the First Firmament mirrors that of Nemesis, another cosmic being who also created beings from solitude.

In an alternate story, the Celestials shattered the singular universe into the Multiverse to trap the Terminators. Unlike the Multiverses that followed it, the First Firmament did not age, as the concept of cosmological change was an idea pioneered by the Celestials. Thus, the First Firmament outlived all its successors, into Eternity. A piece of the First Firmament apparently still exists and can be reached through the bottom of the Creation Quarry.

The First Firmament is virtually omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent. Though considerably weakened upon its destruction, it eventually gained enough power to shackle a weakened Eternity and nearly devour the entire Multiverse. According to the Creator, the First Firmament, as a singular, united Universe, is more powerful than a Multiverse. This was demonstrated when the Creator managed to strengthen Eternity by merging all realities of the Eighth Cosmos into a single Universe (though this also facilitated the First Firmament's assimilation of Eternity).

With the aid of the resurrected Ultimates of Earth-1610, Galactus's Ultimates managed to reverse the damage done to the Superflux and restored the Multiverse to its normal state. Galactus and the Eternity's Watch subsequently resumed their confrontation against the agents of the First Firmament. With the aid of Black Panther's ascended astral form and the reborn Celestials, the Eternity's Watch defeated the Suspects and Logos. The First Firmament was also defeated when Eternity summoned the past incarnations of the Multiverse to its aid, the Ultimates. After being chained, the First Firmament was taken by the Ultimates to the Next Place, where they hoped to heal his kin.

Meanwhile, the Aspirants entered Eternity to harm it however and wherever they could. Following the Aspirants' corruption of two of the cosmic aspects (Lord Chaos and Master Order), the Aspirants were influenced by the First Firmament to assassinate the Living Tribunal, the personification of multiversal law, and merge with the Midwayer to replace him as Logos. Logos then proceeded to execute the Celestials and forced Galactus to transform from the Bringer of Life to the Devourer of Worlds; however, this change was reversed by the Un-Man, Galactus's herald, at the cost of his own life.

To stop the First Firmament and aid Eternity, Galactus assembled Ego-Prime, Psi-Hawk, the Infinaut, and the ghost of the Shaper of Worlds to form the Eternity Watch. The Eternity Watch confronted Logos and the Aspirants in the Superflux. At the same time, the Creator foolishly used the High Evolutionary's technology to bring down the Superflux in an attempt to unify the Multiverse into a single reality and strengthen Eternity. When this process proved to backfire, as it made it easier for the First Firmament to consume Eternity, Galactus had the Shaper's ghost teleport the Ultimates (a team of Earth-based superheroes that Galactus had reformed to aid in his quest against the First Firmament) to the High Evolutionary's Counter-Earth.

The First Firmament watched from a void as the Celestials colonized the Second Cosmos, developing their own servitors and calling them "Omegas" as opposed to the Alpha that created them. As time passed, the Multiverse died again and again, only to be reborn and evolved soon after, filling the Firmament with hatred in its quest to claim its position as the embodiment of all. This sentiment gave it the patience to choose the opportune moment to strike, which came upon the Multiverse's death and rebirth as the Eighth Cosmos. Taking advantage of the weakened state Eternity (the current personification of the Multiverse) was left in after its death and resurrection, the First Firmament chained it up and began to feed on it.

In the beginning, there was only one universe: the First Firmament. Its loneliness drove it to create life, resulting in the birth of several celestial beings. The dark ones, whom the Firmament called "Aspirants", worshipped it fiercely, seeking its approval whenever they created life of their own. But the many-colored ones, later to be known as "Celestials", wanted their creations to evolve, and the universe to evolve with them, and thus to know growth, change, and mortality. This divergence of ideas sparked a war that culminated in the First Firmament being destroyed by the weapons of the many-colored rebels, forcing it to flee in terror to the farthest reaches of being with the remaining Aspirants. Hundreds of new universes were born from the pure substance of the First Firmament, forming a new collective being that was the Second Cosmos and the first Multiverse.

The First Firmament is the embodiment of the first universe that ever existed. It is the creator of the Aspirants and the Celestials, powerful cosmic beings whose conflict nearly destroyed it. Barely surviving the ordeal, the First Firmament watched as its scattered essence became the Multiverse, which underwent multiple cycles of renewal. Following the rebirth of the Eighth Cosmos, the First Firmament launched an attack on Eternity, the current incarnation of the Multiverse.

"Nothing can help you now. Your own systems have been corrupted. They've turned against you. They will devour you from the inside out. And I will absorb what's left of you, Eternity. And all will be as it was, long ago. Before your disgusting kind. Before the Multiverses. Eighth and Seventh... and Sixth... and Fifth... and back again... dying and being born, over and over again. Like filthy little organisms. We will return to a more sane time. When there was only one cosmos. One universe. One reality. One wholeness. When only I existed. I am the First Firmament. And soon... I will be the last."
