The same thing goes for the human heart as it gains resistance to its environment. Strong despair, intense suffering, even anger burning throughout the body will gradually subside. To put it positively, this is adaptation. To put it negatively, it means being exhausted. It must be a function of living as a person. Emotions that are too strong tend to abrade, crush, and scorch the heart. And then they become a hindrance to survival. And eventually, people forget, leaving behind the bitter past, the sad memories, and the painful path taken. A heart filled with despair will lose its true form and then be merely abandoned as recorded information. But recent events will eventually overwrite this information. Time is kinder than anything and will eventually put a plug on this wound—But. Sadly, but... this despair, sadness, and anger. What should a person suffering from these things do to forget all these negative emotions? The answer is clear. ──There is no choice but to continue in despair. Kurumi Tokisaki (Japanese: 時崎狂三, Tokisaki Kurumi) is a major antagonist of the Date A Live franchise and later becomes one of the main protagonists. She was introduced as the main antagonist in Date A Live volumes 3-4 (the second half of season 1) and later becomes an anti-villain in the novel volumes. In side stories, manga, games, CD dramas, encores, and bonuses, she becomes a major character in various Date A Live media, primarily serving as an anti-heroine and supporting character. She is also the main protagonist of the 2017 ongoing canon novel spin-off series, Date A Fragment: Date A Bullet.

Kurumi is the third Spirit encountered in the franchise and is the most dangerous and lethal Spirit to ever appear in the Date A Live universe. She is also the first Spirit to appear as an antagonist in the franchise. She is deeply obsessed with Shido's power and desires to devour him for his spiritual mana in order to travel back in time 30 years and kill Isaac Ray Peram Westcott, Ellen Mira Mathers, Elliot Baldwin Woodman, and Karen Nora Mathers before the group can summon Mio Takamiya and cause the first spatial earthquake, leading to a timeline where Spirits never existed. She has the ability to manipulate time and shadows, and can multiply herself with the lives of all the people she has devoured. Her codename is Nightmare and she is widely known as one of the most popular female supporting characters in light novels and anime in general.

She is voiced by Asami Sanada in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime, and Jussara Marques in the Brazilian dubbed version.

Serial Killing: By the time she debuted in the series, it was estimated that she had already been responsible for the deaths of 10,000 people, often in ritualistic ways, which solidified her reputation as one of the (not the) most brutal and dangerous spirits to ever exist. Kurumi would kill several people throughout the series, often brutally. Child Abuse/Mass Murder: After seeing 4 teenagers torturing a cat, she caused darkness to envelop the area involved and brutally devoured the entire group except for one. Psychological abuse: She forced the last teenager to witness the death of his friends and even drew a target on him with their blood. Kidnapping: Unknown Terrorism: In episode 9, Kurumi Tokisaki threatens to destroy the city and Raizen High School with a spatial earthquake to force Shido to surrender. Even so, she attempted to destroy Raizen High School with the Spatial Quake so she could prove to Shido how sadistic and irredeemable she was. Stalking: Kurumi stalked Shido Itsuka, infiltrating Raizen High School to get close to him. Even after her disappearance, she was still in Tenguu City, sometimes watching Shido. Mutilation: Unknown Sexual abuse: Unknown Psychological Description Kurumi is a person whose character is difficult to read. She possesses a dislike for humanity that borders on distrust, something she shares with most of the other Spirits in her debut. She is a skilled actress, able to pretend to be an innocent and curious young woman when necessary. This skill is demonstrated when she enrolled as a student at Raizen High School and spoke politely. However, beneath this mask lies a madwoman, prone to fits of insane laughter and with no regard for human life, seeing it as a source of nourishment to restore her own time and, therefore, a disposable commodity.

There's a twisted justice behind her methods, however, as the people she brutally murdered were alleged rapists and animal abusers. Furthermore, a good sign of her sense of justice lies in her ultimate goal: to go back in time, kill the First Spirit, prevent the earthquakes from happening, and save millions of lives in the process. This goal has led Shadow to call her a kind person, albeit sarcastically.

In retrospect, Kurumi possesses a certain degree of innocence that her crazy behavior hasn't entirely ruined; she has a soft spot for small animals and other creatures. She once killed four humans not because she needed to replenish her time, but because they were trying to kill a kitten. She also seemed to have some desire for a normal life and a chance at redemption, as Shido was able to speak to one of her many timelines and nearly convinced her before the real Kurumi interrupted. However, despite her non-killing and redeeming qualities, Kurumi doesn't seem to consider herself a great person and even seems to hate being called one.

Her ability to summon shadow clones of herself from other timelines adds even more complexity to her character. The clones are essentially her, meaning they share the same personality but also have free will to some extent, even though they share memories, goals, fears, and obsessions. It's also hinted that each clone's experiences affect the main character, as after helping Shido locate Tohka (so Kurumi could track the Second Spirit) and parting ways, Kurumi was shown talking to her clones and was happy to receive a pat on the head from Shido. Some of her clones also slightly reflect her previous personality; the clone Shido faced on the school rooftop almost agreed to let Shido save her.

Kurumi seems to have a particular fondness for cats, as demonstrated by her brutally murdering a group of men who were shooting one of them with pellet guns. In an omake, it's shown that she can be quite embarrassed by this. When Shido and Tohka caught her, she went so far as to have one of her clones pretend to be the real her and "dispose" of her so she could get out of the situation without ruining her reputation.

Before becoming a Spirit, Kurumi had a strong sense of justice. Despite lamenting the inequality in the world, she always had a strong desire to help those in need. This trait was considered pure and naive, the latter of which Mio exploited to trick her into becoming a Spirit who hunted other Spirits who were incompatible with her Sephira Crystals.
