They are a secret organization that has existed for hundreds of years in the world of Demon Slayer. Their main goal is to protect humanity by eliminating demons, creatures created by Muzan Kibutsuji that feed on people.

They are not officially known to the government, they operate in the shadows.

They are made up of swordsmen trained in different combat styles called Breathing Techniques.

They use Nichirin swords, special katanas made of a mineral that absorbs sunlight, the only element deadly to demons.

They are the strongest warriors in the Corps.

Each Pillar masters a unique style of Breathing (Water, Flame, Wind, Insect, etc.).

There are a total of nine Hashira who lead the hunters in the fight against the demons.

Apprentices must survive a grueling test called the Final Selection, where they face real demons on a mountain for several days.

Those who survive officially become Demon Hunters.

His most important mission is to defeat Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon and responsible for the existence of all the others.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) summary

The story begins with Tanjiro Kamado, a kind-hearted young man who lives with his family in the mountains, where he makes a living selling charcoal. One day, upon returning home, he discovers that his family has been brutally murdered by a demon. The only survivor is his younger sister, Nezuko, who has been turned into a demon, though she retains some of her humanity and never attacks Tanjiro. Tanjiro decides to join the Demon Slayer Corps, a secret organization dedicated to fighting these creatures to protect humanity. Guided by his teacher Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjiro learns to use the Water Breathing technique, a katana combat style that allows him to face demons. During his missions, Tanjiro meets two allies who will accompany him on his journey:

Zenitsu Agatsuma, a cowardly young man but with a great hidden talent thanks to the Lightning Breathing.

Inosuke Hashibira, an impulsive boy raised in the mountains, who uses Beast Breath and always wears a boar mask.

The three of them, along with Nezuko, experience numerous battles against powerful demons sent by Muzan Kibutsuji, the first and strongest demon, responsible for the creation of the others. Muzan is also responsible for the tragedy of the Kamado family. In their fight, Tanjiro and his friends come into contact with the Pillars (Hashira), the most powerful swordsmen in the Hunter Corps. Among them are Giyu Tomioka (Water Pillar), Kyojuro Rengoku (Flame Pillar), Shinobu Kocho (Insect Pillar), and many others who become great allies. The story covers different arcs, such as:

The Mount Natagumo Arc, where Tanjiro and his friends face the spider demon family.

The Infinity Train Arc, where they fight alongside Rengoku against the demon Enmu and then against Akaza, of the Twelve Kizuki.

The Entertainment District, where the brothers face each other

It was a short period but one of many changes in Japan.

After the Meiji Era (where Japan modernized a lot), in Taishō there was a mix between tradition and modernity.

There were trains, electricity, firearms… but traditional clothing like kimonos was still worn.

That's why in the series you see both nichirin swords and trains (the infinite train).

The characters wear kimonos, but modern school and military uniforms also appear.

Electric lamps, cameras and telephones were beginning to be used, but they were not everywhere.

Japan was opening up to the world, but still had a strong connection to its ancient customs.

There were contrasts: in big cities like Tokyo, technological advances were seen, while in rural areas (like Tanjiro's village) life remained very traditional.

🌸 4. How it connects with demons

The blend of tradition and modernity creates a unique atmosphere where the ancient (breathing, katanas, temples) coexist with the modern (trains, illuminated cities).

Muzan himself represents that mix: sometimes he dresses like an ancient Japanese nobleman, and other times like a modern man of the time. The Taishō Era in Japan began in 1912 and ended in 1926 📜. It lasted 14 years, just after the Meiji Era (1868–1912) and before the Shōwa Era (1926–1989). It is in this period that the story of Demon Slayer takes place.
