Yami Yugi

Main article: Yami Yugi decks Yami Yugi usually duels using Yugi Muto's Decks. On some occasions, he has had his own Deck, including the Ceremonial Battle Deck. Here, his Deck revolved around the Summoning of the Egyptian Gods and also contained a number of "Dark Magician" support cards.

When the game switches to Yami in Yu-Gi-Oh! R, he uses his "Dark Magician" and other Magician and Warrior-type monsters.

Powers and abilities Yami Yugi's most notable skill is his talent for playing Duel Monsters. He can also use his connection to the Millennium Puzzle and its magic to transform ordinary games into a Shadow Duel. Yami Yugi appears to be free from physical constraints, allowing him to run, walk, and swim at high speeds without tiring. As seen in the Toei manga and anime, Yami Yugi can hypnotize with the puzzle's magic through Penalty Games. This causes his targets to believe what he desires or do what he desires. As a result, many of his Penalty Games involve illusions that drive opponents insane, making them hear or see something that isn't there.

He is very agile, capable of jumping very high and landing perfectly. Yami is a skilled rider thanks to his upbringing, which allowed him to learn to ride a horse without ever losing his grip. In episode 155, Yami gallops on horseback to join Raphaël after finding the spot, jumping down the slope with great skill without falling off his horse.

Seto Kaiba Seto Kaiba is the reincarnation of Priest Seto and Yami's rival. They fight each other in duels to prove their skills and only trust each other when the situation demands it. The two have also dueled as a team, although in earlier stories, Kaiba refused to duel as a team, believing he could do it himself. Over time, the two begin to trust each other and work well together, even though Kaiba doesn't approve. Yami dislikes it when Kaiba speaks ill of his friends, particularly Joey Wheeler. Even though Kaiba never shows his kindness to Yami or his friends, he always feels Kaiba helping him through difficult times. Furthermore, Kaiba always encourages Yami to be a better duelist, especially since, if Yami holds the title of "King of Games," he must demonstrate it.

Tristan Taylor Although Yami doesn't interact with Tristan as much as the others, he is a dear friend. Yami relies on his support and trust in his duels. When the Big Five took over Tristan's body in the Virtual World arc, Yami was determined to help his friend. He also apologized in advance for directly attacking his body. Serenity Wheeler Serenity Wheeler is the younger sister of Joey Wheeler (Katsuya Jonouchi in the manga). Although Yami doesn't talk to her as much as Joey, he still considers her a friend. Joey Wheeler Like Yugi, Joey is Yami's best friend. He encourages him in his duels and reminds him of what it means to be a true duelist. When Yami was about to defeat Joey in Duelist Kingdom, he told him it was one of the hardest things he'd ever done, even breaking down in tears.

In Battle City, the two agreed to face each other in the finals, with Yami holding onto Joey's "Red Eyes" until he could get them back. When Yami discovered Marik had his eye on Joey, he was desperate to find his friend and struggled when he was forced to duel him when Marik took control of Joey with the Millennium Rod. Joey dueled Yami, but Yugi later regained control. Serenity removed the bandages at the perfect moment; Joey and Yugi were being dragged out to sea. Joey encouraged Yami to fulfill his promise to duel in the finals, allowing him to challenge Yami Marik whenever he wanted to save Mai. Despite the danger, Yami chose to believe in his friend and supported him. However, after Joey was knocked unconscious, Yami felt guilty, thinking he would put his friend's life at risk by finding his memories. When the Millennium Necklace showed him a vision of the two dueling, Yami regained the confidence to continue fighting.

Joey was the one who gave Yami his final encouragement to go through the portal to the afterlife, assuring him that no matter what happened, they would always be friends and that everything Yami gave them would remain in their hearts.

Duke Devlin Duke and Yami didn't get off to a great start. Duke believed Yugi didn't rightfully win the Duelist Kingdom tournament and that he was the reason Pegasus disappeared and lost him the chance to have his Dungeon Dice Monsters game distributed. After Duke defeated Joey at Duel Monsters (using a pack of cards from Duke's store) and, as a result, Joey was forced to be Duke's slave for a week dressed as a dog, even Duke's cheerleaders shamed him. Tired of Joey's humiliation, Yami emerged and challenged Duke to a game. If he beat Duke, he would return Joey's freedom. Duke smugly agreed, but told Yami they would play Dungeon Dice Monsters and added that if Yami lost, he must swear on his grandfather's life that he would never play Duel Monsters again, and Yami accepted. For much of the game, Duke held the advantage, mainly due to having retained several of Yugi's tips, but the tables soon turned for Yami, who managed to summon the Dark Magician, as well as his special abilities, and won. After the victory, Duke felt terrible for accusing Yugi of cheating, but all his friends forgave Duke and became friends. From then on, Duke became a close friend and ally to Yami and his friends.

Gardner Tea Téa is one of Yami's close friends and was the first of Yugi's friends to discover his story. She became interested in him after he saved her from a bandit. When Yami was unsure whether to learn about his past, Téa offered him advice and told him to follow his heart. After discovering he was the spirit of an Egyptian pharaoh, Yami trusted her not to tell Yugi until she felt his partner could understand. Like all his friends, Yami tries to keep Téa out of danger and is grateful for her support.

Although he cares deeply for Téa, it's unclear whether Yami reciprocates his romantic feelings. He teased and encouraged Yugi to ask her out, knowing how he feels about her.

Until the end of the series, Yami and Yugi continued to support each other with all their strength, sharing both their sad and happy moments together. When Yugi won the Ceremonial Duel against Yami, Yugi proclaimed that he wasn't ready or strong enough to leave Yami yet. Yami, however, said otherwise, commenting that although he was leaving Yugi forever, the gift of kindness Yugi gave him, and the gift of courage he gave Yugi, will unite them.

Despite his complete obedience to Yugi, Yami sometimes risked his bond with him in duels that brought him to the brink of defeat. While Yami vehemently refused to put Yugi's life at risk and always believed in his decisions, Yami's pride and refusal to lose sometimes prevented him from listening to Yugi, as seen in his duel against Kaiba for the second time in the "Duelist Kingdom" arc, and against Rafael in the "Awakening the Dragons" arc, where he would do anything to avoid losing the duel. In the latter duel, however, Yami displayed great regret for losing Yugi due to his arrogance, and was so influenced by the loss of his partner that he lost faith in himself. When Weevil Underwood joked that he had ripped up the card containing Yugi's soul in his duel against Yami, Yami became very angry and used his Spell Card "Berserker Soul" to launch continuous attacks against him until he drew a Spell or Trap Card. Although Yami won the duel, he continued to attack Weevil mercilessly until Téa stopped him.

Yami manages to neutralize Pegasus' strategy by using the last card Yugi selected, "Dark Magic Ritual," and a combination of Spell Cards, resulting in the "Magician of Dark Chaos" being pitted against Pegasus' "Thousand Eyes Restraint." Using "Multiply," the "Thousand Eyes Restraint" is forced to absorb a "Kuriboh Token" and has each of its eyes covered, freeing the Mage from his paralysis. Yugi manages to regain a spot in the finals, while Mai gives him her surplus Star Chips in gratitude for recovering hers from PaniK. Yami faces Mai in the first round of the finals, but treats her condescendingly and only thinks about facing Pegasus. This leads to many poor plays on Yugi's part. (In the English dub, Yugi refuses to let Yami duel, afraid that he might hurt his opponent, as he was willing to hurt Kaiba. Yami tries to convince Yugi to let him duel, but Yugi struggles weakly. After talking to Mai about facing his fears, Yugi lets Yami take control.) Having faith in his friends and everyone who depends on him, Yami summons the "Black Luster Soldier" and uses it to defeat Mai.

Yugioh033 Yami Yugi vs Joey. Yami Yugi faces Joey in the finals. Despite being friends, neither player holds back. Joey uses everything he's learned from the Yugis in the past and engages in a fierce duel. Both players burst into tears when Yami makes his final move and wins the duel.

Yami Tag Duels with Joey as they face the Paradox Brothers together. The game, being a Labyrinth Duel, is heavily weighted in the Paradox Brothers' favor, but Yami Yugi and Joey are able to defeat them through teamwork. To exit the Labyrinth, there are two paths out of the arena: one leads out of the caves, while the other leads into an endless maze. To help both, the brothers state that one of them will speak only lies, while the other will speak only the truth, and they also allow Yami Yugi and Joey to ask one question each to determine which path is correct. However, Yami deduces that both brothers are lying and that they have the power to change which path leads where. Using a double-headed coin to trick the brothers into admitting this, Yugi and his friends escape the caves. After this victory, Yami Yugi and Joey have enough Star Chips to enter the finals.

Yami Yugi(24) Yami Yugi dueling Kaiba to face Pegasus in the final. Upon entering the castle to compete in the finals, Yugi is confronted by Kaiba, who must defeat Yugi before facing Pegasus. Kaiba summons the "Ultimate Blue-Eyes Dragon," causing problems for Yami. Yugi and his friends encountered Bakura Ryou. Yami Bakura trapped Tristan, Téa, Joey, Yugi, and Bakura in Duel Monster cards, while he and Yami Yugi Duel them in their Decks. After summoning "Dark Magician," the card Yugi had transformed into, Joey, Téa, and Tristan see that there are two Yugis for the first time in the anime. Yami then faces PaniK to retrieve Mai's Star Tokens, which she lost to him. Yami believes he knows what kind of man PaniK was—a cowardly bully hiding behind his defenses. Yami defeats him, but PaniK refuses to give up and uses flame injectors to try to kill the Millennium Puzzle's spirit. Yami shields himself with the Millennium Puzzle's power and inflicts a Mind Crush on PaniK.

Mokuba Kaiba, who was held prisoner by Pegasus, escapes and steals another Duelist's Deck. Mokuba wants revenge for how Kaiba Corporation was humiliated after Seto Kaiba lost to Yugi and knows Pegasus needs to defeat Yugi to take over KaibaCorp. He duels Yami Yugi hoping to eliminate him so Pegasus can't face him in the finals. Unable to defeat Yami, Mokuba steals two of his Star Chips to disqualify him. Yami manages to convince Mokuba that they should be working together and return the stolen Star Chips. Mokuba tries to return the first Star Chips he stole, but the Duelist he took them from is already being sent off the island. As Mokuba shows Kemo the Duelist's Star Chips, Kemo throws them into the water, including two of Yugi's, and takes Mokuba captive. Yami challenges Kemo to a duel for Mokuba's freedom. Kemo does not duel, but sets up another meeting, where he will have an opponent for Yugi.

Yami faced the Mimic of Doom, who initially disguised himself as Kaiba. The Mimic insisted that Kaiba was dead and that he was his ghost seeking revenge. In the English dub, he claimed to be Kaiba's evil half, whom Yami had sent to the Shadow Realm. In each case, Yami's opponent used Kaiba's Deck. Yugi was able to defeat one of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon cards single-handedly, and then the real Seto Kaiba hacked into Pegasus' computer system and installed a virus in the second Blue-Eyes White Dragon summoned by Yami's opponent, inspiring Yugi to defeat the final Dragon by using "Monster Reborn" to bring the first Blue-Eyes back to his side and transfer the attack power of "Mystic Elf" to his Dragon. In the Japanese anime, he used the Millennium Puzzle to put the Mimic into a coma. In the English dub, he expelled all the evil from Mimic.

Kaiba challenges Solomon Muto to a duel after seeing his "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" for the first time. He defeats Grandpa and tears up the card. Yami Yugi, stating that it will never be used against him, duels him using Grandpa's Deck. Kaiba summons the other three "Blue-Eyes White Dragons," and Yugi defeats him with "Exodia the Forbidden." After the victory, he unleashes his intense mind-crushing abilities on Kaiba, dispelling his evil side.

With his sights set on the Millennium Puzzle (in the English dub), Maximillion Pegasus sends Yugi a videotape and an invitation to Duelist Kingdom. When the video plays, Pegasus appears on screen and requests a duel with Yugi. Using his Millennium Eye, Pegasus takes Yugi to the Shadow Realm, while Yugi's friends and Grandpa are frozen. Yami Yugi emerges and duels Pegasus. Pegasus reads Yami's mind using his Millennium Eye and learns his strategies. Yami ultimately loses due to the duel's time limit. Pegasus then steals Grandpa's soul, using his Millennium Eye to blackmail Yugi into entering the Duelist Kingdom tournament.

In the tournament, Yami defeats Weevil Underwood and Mako Tsunami and supports Joey in his duel against Mai.

Biography Origin Pharaoh Atem defeated Zorc Necrophades, sacrificing his life in the process. He used his name as part of a spell that sealed Zorc's soul and his soul within the Millennium Puzzle. The puzzle was unraveled by Priest Seto and entombed in the Pharaoh's tomb.

3,000 years later (5,000 in the 4Kids version), the Jigsaw Puzzle was found by Solomon Muto. Solomon's guide tried to kill him to take the Pharaoh's treasure for himself. After the guide met his fate at the hands of a monster, Solomon was saved by the apparent spirit of Atem. When he returned home, he brought the Jigsaw Puzzle with him. In the Japanese anime, Yami often refers to Yugi as "aibou" ("partner"). There have been instances where he has also referred to Yugi as "another me." Being more proud than Yugi, he uses "ore." Hence, he called Yugi "mou hitori no ore."

Yami's pride is both his greatest strength and weakness. Initially, he refuses to lose matches, regardless of the consequences. This led him to nearly kill Seto Kaiba by attacking his monster while he was on a ledge, the shockwaves of which could knock him off his feet if Yugi decided to win the duel (in the Japanese version, Kaiba threatened to commit suicide if he lost). Yami expressed great sadness and guilt after the battle due to Yugi's voluntary suffering, which was due to Yami's actions. Personality At the beginning of the manga, Dark Yugi begins as a ruthless vigilante. He emerges to deliver justice to those who invade the souls of Yugi and his friends. While his actions are righteous, he lives up to his Dark namesake; his punishments in the Penalty Game are often quite brutal. Later, while living inside Yugi's body, he seems to become more caring, kind, and friendly, though he always had this in him, and the friendship of Yugi's friends helped reveal this to others. Yami is a strong, powerful, and skilled pharaoh. He tries to balance darkness and evil with the use of his Millennium Item's Shadow Magic. Unlike Yami Bakura and Yami Marik, he never uses it for personal gain, preferring to help those in need and inflict punishment only on those who have gravely harmed innocents.

He is somewhat reserved, as he doesn't reveal his existence to Yugi or his friends. At first, Yugi feared Yami Yugi, but after Yugi admits he believes "another Yugi" exists within him, his friends realize his existence and accept him as a friend. Even before this, Yami is extremely protective of Yugi.

When he played Dungeon Dice Monsters against Duke Devlin, he wore a dark gray long-sleeved shirt, a sleeveless vest, dark blue pants, and black shoes. When he and Téa spent a day together solving the Millennium Puzzle, he wore black linen and several pieces of wrist chains to match the Millennium Puzzle chain.

In Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters, Yami wears a different outfit, a purple jacket and jeans. He also wears the Capsule Shooter on his left arm. In episode 4, he gains the Dueling Armor, which allows him to bond with one of his Capsule Monsters.

At the beginning of the series, his outfit consists of the standard Domino High boys' uniform, complete with a buckled collar and a large set of Ankh cufflinks on the sleeves, which were not present when Yugi was in control. Underneath the Domino High boys' uniform, he wears a dark blue or purple leather jacket with gold-studded buttons, replaced by a simple dark gray tank top during the Battle City Tournament story arc. He wears the Millennium Puzzle on a brown leather cord around his neck. The leather cord is later replaced by a chain.

Yugi's character design was supervised by Kazuki Takahashi.

Since he exists in Yugi's body, his appearance is virtually identical to Yugi's, though many changes are made when Yami takes over, such as his eyes. However, Yami Yugi has a more mature appearance, being taller and having a deeper voice in the 4Kids dub. In the Japanese version, however, very little change can be detected in Yugi and Yami Yugi's voices. His eyes are also narrower, with a more intense and determined look. He also appears more muscular.

Yami Yugi's hair is layered, including long, spiky, twisted blonde strands that form his bangs. Unlike Yugi, some of the blonde strands stick up. The rest of his hair features five large black spikes with red (with a hint of magenta) along the edges. The spikes were loose and flowing at the beginning of the manga, but over time they became stiffer.

In many illustrations, Yami Yugi is depicted with purple eyes, just like Yugi. On some of the covers of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, he is depicted with aquamarine eyes.

Yami Yugi, known as Dark Yugi in the manga and Japanese versions, and also known as the Nameless Pharaoh, is the spirit of Pharaoh Atem that was sealed in the Millennium Puzzle. He is the main protagonist of the original and second series, along with Yugi Muto.

Along with Yugi, he holds the title of "King of Games" (King of Duelists in the Japanese version), for winning the Duelist Kingdom, Battle City, Grand Championship, and Battle City V2 (in the GX anime) tournaments.

After Yugi Muto solved the Millennium Puzzle, Yami Yugi resided in Yugi's body and took possession of him when Yugi or his friends were in danger. After Yugi became fully aware of Yami's existence, Yugi could voluntarily relinquish control of his body to the Pharaoh; occasionally, before either relinquished control, they, as souls in the mind of the one controlling Yugi's body, would converse with each other, usually discussing their options for what to do in difficult situations.
