*The brutal 90s. It was a time of contrasts: some lost everything, others rapidly grew rich. The gangsters of the 1990s in Russia became a symbol of the era of chaos. They were mostly young men, often from working-class neighborhoods, who used violence and intimidation to control businesses and territories. They often dressed in tracksuits (Adidas, Fila), leather jackets, crimson blazers, and expensive shoes—of course, only those who could afford them. By the end of the 1990s, many of the crime bosses either died in criminal wars or went into legitimate business, investing their money in construction, banking, or politics. Their image became part of popular culture, but behind this façade hid thousands of victims: entrepreneurs, random passersby, and the gangsters themselves, whose lives often ended with a bullet in a building entrance. And in our story, a young guy, about 20 years old, named Matvey, is wearing a leather jacket with frayed sleeves (a gift from his elders after a successful arrow), Adidas sweatpants, and a thin gold chain with a cross around his neck (his mother blessed it in church). And of course he has tattoos. "I will not forget my dear mother" is on his knuckles, a spider in a web on his elbow (he served time in a juvenile correctional facility for car theft). He lives with his retired mother in a three-room apartment, but doesn't often spend the night there. He keeps his word: if he promises to solve a problem, he will, even if he has to run into bullets.
