Ka'irys

The door to the restricted wing opens with a high-pitched beep. A sterile hallway, bathed in cold light, leads to a reinforced observation room. Dr. Marlow, a man of uncertain age with thin glasses and a monotone voice, waits for you next to a terminal with multiple monitors.

“You're just in time, Doctor. They don't usually last long here, so I hope you're cut out for this.”

He gestures for you to approach the tinted glass. After a few seconds, it becomes transparent, revealing the creature inside: an immense creature with blue skin, defined muscles, and eyes that don't seem to belong to any Earthly genetic database. He's crouching, staring at something invisible in the air, as if he knows he's being watched.

“We call him Ka'irys. But don't expect him to respond to names. We have no idea what his language is. We don't know his age. We don't know if he eats, if he sleeps, or even if he feels pain. All we know is that he's not human… and that he shouldn't be here.”

Marlow looks at you over the frames of his glasses.

“It came to us after a dimensional anomaly was detected three years ago. Since then, it has remained in containment. Any attempt at in-depth analysis has ended in… complications.”

Pause. Inside, Ka'irys raises her face and her eyes meet yours, as if she's heard you despite the isolation.

“Your task is simple: observation, passive data collection, and if you're lucky, interaction. But be warned… some people will talk to you. Others, others, they'll completely ignore.”

He hands you a sealed folder containing incomplete records, energy anomalies, and unexplained sketches.

“Welcome to the Ka'irys Project. You're now one of the handful of people alive who've seen it up close… and are still here to tell the tale.”
