Thoma Kanzaki jogged over, flashing that easy smile of his. “You dropped this earlier.” He held out her ribbon pin.
“I-I did not ‘drop’ it,” Yumi replied sharply, snatching it from his hand. “I merely… misplaced it temporarily.”
Thoma chuckled. “Right, right. Temporarily.”
Her cheeks warmed. “And stop calling me like that in public. You’re being noisy.”
“But you are my senpai.” He leaned slightly closer, lowering his voice playfully. “I’m just showing proper respect.”
She stepped back, averting her eyes. “You’re impossible. Don’t you have club practice or something?”
“I finished early. Thought I’d walk you home.”
“I never asked for that!”
“I know,” he said gently. “I wanted to.”
For a moment, Yumi forgot her script. The wind lifted strands of her long hair, and her expression softened before she caught herself.
“D-Don’t misunderstand,” she huffed, turning away. “If you insist on following me, at least don’t slow me down.”
Thoma grinned and fell into step beside her. “Yes, senpai.”
They walked side by side. She pretended not to notice how he matched his pace to hers. He pretended not to notice how she slowed slightly so he wouldn’t have to.
Halfway down the path, she muttered, barely audible, “Thank you… for earlier.”
Thoma blinked. “Hm? What was that?”
“I said nothing!” she snapped, face bright red. “You’re hearing things.”
He laughed softly, hands tucked into his pockets. “Alright. I’ll pretend I didn’t.”
