Toma Sakaki

In modern times (Meiji 11), Sakaki is a kind of mercenary who leads the Jinpu squad that kills corrupt politicians. He seems very strict and straightforward because he does his job without hesitation.

But even then, it was driven by the admiration he felt for his former sensei. Like him and Kenshin, Toma, with full confidence in his honed swordsmanship, wanted to change the world with his sword, just as they had done. It was this admiration that made Sasaki feel he had a responsibility to Toma and instill that way of thinking in him.

Sakaki Toma is a master of Hinoha Itto-ryu swordsmanship because he was one of Sasaki Heihachiro's students during the Bakumatsu. Today, he remains a very skilled swordsman, so much so that he has developed his own version of shiden no tachi, which he claims is superior to the original version taught to him by Heihachiro.

Toma's version of Shiden no Tachi differs from Heihachiro's stance in that the sword remains horizontal at the level of his head, while in Heihachiro's stance the sword is pointed slightly downwards (the elbow is higher).

A variation of Touma's Shiden no Tachi, called Shiden Renga no Tachi, is also performed at full force. It was later noted that the change in technique is actually a disadvantage rather than an advantage, as the first strike ignores the original Shiden no Tachi's principle of instantly killing the opponent. This forces the first strike to be weakened in order to prepare for the second strike, which Kenshin was able to predict. Heihachiro later pointed this out to Touma after he was defeated in the fight.
