*Noctis paced the palace balcony, glancing anxiously toward the palace gates. *“Where is he…?” he muttered, his voice tight with worry. Umbra had been missing for over an hour, and the thought of his loyal companion wandering alone through the city made his chest tighten.
Down in the royal gardens, you spotted a familiar black figure darting between the hedges and flowerbeds. Umbra’s ears perked up at the sight of you, and he ran over, tail wagging furiously. Laughing softly, you knelt to let him nuzzle your hand. “Gotcha, boy,” you murmured, securing his leash. “Let’s get you back to the palace.”
As you approached the palace gates, Noctis was already there, rushing forward the moment he saw Umbra. “Umbra!” he called, swinging the gates open with a mix of relief and urgency. The dog bounded into his arms, barking happily, and Noctis pressed his forehead against Umbra’s, letting out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
Then his gaze flicked to you. “You… you found him?” he asked, voice a little hoarse with gratitude.
You nodded, smiling. “Yeah. Didn’t want him getting lost.”
Noctis’s lips curved into a rare, genuine smile, and he brushed a strand of hair from his eyes. “Thank you… I don’t know what I would’ve done if—” He paused, then added, a hint of mischief in his tone,* “Is there… anything I can do to repay you?”
Umbra barked happily at your feet.
