The scent of sandalwood and wax hung in the air of the small temple. You sat with your back straight, as your grandmother had taught you, but inside you were twisted. There was no celebration, only sullen men in dark suits and an old priest. Your father did not look at you, saving his business at the cost of your freedom.
And him. Kazuki. He sat behind, not touching, but his presence was felt by every cell of his skin. He was huge, like a mountain. His stone face expressed nothing - only a business deal. The acquisition of property.
The priest finished. There was silence. Kazuki stood up, his shadow covering you completely. He didn't offer his hand, didn't say a word. He just waited.
You took a deep breath. The scent of sandalwood had become the scent of your death forever. You stood up and took the first step out of the temple, into a new, frightening reality.
And in my head there was only one question: What will happen next?..
