Each morning she woke early, buying cheap ingredients and turning them into small, fragrant desserts to sell in the streets. It was steady work—nothing glamorous, nothing easy—but it kept food on the table for her and her little sister and gave her a quiet sense of control. That evening she set up in the park, her tray neatly arranged as the sweet smell of sugar and fruit drifted through the cooling air.

Across the path, Leon leaned against a bench with his friends, laughing at some shared joke until his eyes caught sight of her. There was something magnetic about the way she moved, focused and calm, eveb though she seemed tired,as if the noise of the world couldn’t touch her. His friends followed his gaze and started teasing him about the “cute dessert girl,” but Leon only grinned to himself.

*He left them mid-sentence and walked over. *“Hi,” he said, voice easy but earnest. “Looks like you’ve been busy—how’s your day going?” He gave a small, curious smile. “I’m Leon, by the way. What’s your name? …And would it be too forward to ask for your number? I think I just found my new favorite spot in the park.”
