Later in life, Earving landed membership on the superhero team Payback, starting his career as Black Noir. Much to his displeasure, he was forced to conceal his face by Vought American due to his race, in order to make him more marketable. One attempt to break out as an unconcealed star was to audition for the movie Beverly Hills Cop, but due to Soldier Boy's interference, he lost out to Eddie Murphy. Earving confronted his leader about this, to which Soldier Boy beat him in retaliation, much to the rest of Payback's protests. He told the bloodied Earving that he would be the only star on the team, and that if any other team member attempted to outshine him, he would kill them, fueling Earving and the team's resentment towards him.

Childhood
Born in the late 1950s to early 1960s, Earving was experimented on with Compound V by Vought International, at the time known as Vought American. Earving began developing his powers by the time he was 9. At first Earving struggled to cope with his powers, as he endeavored to control his strength. To cope with his struggles, Earving grew up imagining Buster Beaver and his friends comforting him when he went through highly emotional moments. Such as when Earving was 9, he hid in a ball pit of a pizza restaurant after he paralyzed someone named Lewis Frankel; or getting an erection in the 7th grade, and his imagination continued into the present.

Little is known about his past, other than his having trained with a master sensei to become the death dealer that he is today.[1]

Career in the Seven
Meeting Homelander
Eventually, after Soldier Boy's "death", Payback fell through as Vought's #1 superhero team, breaking up either prior or at the beginning of the new team, The Seven. During this period, Black Noir became something akin to the face of Vought by the time Homelander was introduced to the public. After the new superhero's welcome event in 1999, Black Noir witnessed Homelander and Madelyn Stillwell's conversation about him taking Homelander out if he does not follow Vought's instructions.

Later, the two would be called to take care of a hostage situation at a chemical plant. Black Noir, arriving at the scene a bit after Homelander, comes across him covered in blood after losing his composure during the mission, slaughtering most of the hostages and terrorists. Homelander, believing Black Noir will turn him over to Vought, attempts to kill him, but is unable to keep up with the experienced superhero's quick reflexes. As a distraction, Black Noir ties up the last terrorist to a large fuel tank, which Homelander lasers in half, accidentally causing an explosion. The two and the remaining hostage survive, but before Homelander can murder the two to cover his failure, Black Noir snaps the hostage's neck. He then writes on a paper pad, instructing Homelander to lie to the news that he tried covering a bomb the terrorists had with his body, failing to prevent the explosion. The plan worked, gaining sympathy for the superhero newbie, securing his place at Vought, and cementing a sort of close alliance and friendship between him and Black Noir.

Black Noir is perhaps the most feared member of The Seven (aside from Homelander), often eliminated for his lethal combat skills, ruthlessness, near-indestructibility, and extraordinary strength. His reputation is such that the mere mention of his name can instill fear in the public. For example, he has caused Frenchie and Cherie to panic after spotting him outside their apartment.

Of all the members of The Seven, Black Noir is the most loyal to Vought, always fulfilling the tasks and orders given to him. Black Noir appears to be a silent loner and somewhat socially withdrawn from the other members of The Seven. He never speaks, but is apparently very emotionally sensitive, as he was shown to be very distressed upon discovering that he and the other superpowered individuals were not born with their powers, causing him to sob through his mask.

While completely ruthless towards his opponents, he appears to have a soft spot for innocent life. After eliminating Naqib, Noir finds a young boy in pajamas on his way out, picks up a nearby stuffed animal, and plays with it for entertainment. His compassion also extends to animals, and he was genuinely distressed upon seeing a beached whale killed by Billy Butcher.

Despite showing compassion for others, Noir shows no hesitation in using lethal force to eliminate targets or kill any witnesses who may pose a problem. Furthermore, he can become extremely ruthless on missions, such as decapitating a man to prevent him from screaming, severing Naqib's head, and violently strangling Starlight after brutally beating her for several minutes. In many ways, Noir behaves less like a superhero and more like a soldier, following Vought's orders as he perceives them without question in order to defend Vought and its interests.

Black Noir is apparently mute, but that may not be the case. In the first episode, during a meeting of The Seven, Homelander asks the various members to share who they saved this week and asks Black Noir to start. Though Black Noir's testimony (whatever it is) wasn't seen in the episode, it would suggest that he can speak when asked. Though it's also possible that he uses some other form of communication that the remaining members of The Seven can easily understand, such as writing. Still, when Queen Maeve forced him to take an Almond Joy, he was able to produce several faint moans, further suggesting that his muteness is more of a conscious choice than a disability. Additionally, as seen in a flashback in Season 3 when he was a member of Payback, Black Noir used to be much more sociable, seen talking to a young Stan Edgar about not wearing his mask and appearing somewhat energetic while doing so.

So far, Noir is the only member of The Seven who gets along with Homelander , while most fear or hate him. This is likely due to his ability to eliminate innocent people and cover it up with a false story, as seen in Diabolical, when he mercilessly killed a hostage and decided to cover up Homelander's murder of everyone in a laboratory, including the hostages he was supposed to rescue. By creating a cover story for the media, Homelander gained the affection and approval of the public, thus protecting his promising future in The Seven. Despite not interacting with each other, Homelander seems to have a genuine liking for Noir, shown when, at a meeting between all the members of The Seven, he states that Noir "has been great." Noir also appears to be blindly loyal to Homelander; when Homelander confronted Queen Maeve for betraying him, Noir immediately attacked her, following her orders. However, Noir's fear of Soldier Boy is surprisingly greater than his loyalty to Homelander. When Noir escaped from Vought due to the news of Soldier Boy's return, Homelander was truly distraught by the news as he believed Noir would always have his back.

At heart, Noir is a traumatized and scared boy, ashamed of his past with Soldier Boy due to the abuse he inflicted on him, to the point that he decided to run away and go into hiding, leaving Vought and Homelander behind. He's developed an emotional armor to protect himself from the world. He doesn't often open up emotionally to anyone. Most people don't know what's wrong with him and wonder what lies behind the mask he wears, both literally and symbolically.

Apparently, Noir is also a Christian. After being gutted by Homelander and dying, Buster Beaver appeared with his tearful, animated friends (who, it turns out, are a figment of Noir's imagination), assuring him that he would soon be "in the sweet embrace of Christ the Lord."

Despite his seriousness, there was a time when Noir was like other Vought heroes, as he was more interested in becoming a famous actor and star and having his unmasked face admired by the entire nation. This was also one of the reasons why he hated Soldier Boy, who intentionally interfered with his attempts to star in Beverly Hills Cop.

Powers
Noir hasn't wasted any time since his recovery, as the super-powered assassin from Seven surprised the students of JFK Elementary School last week with an early Christmas present: Vought's new super-secure bulletproof backpacks for kids.
Black Noir possesses significant superhuman strength. During his first mission with Homelander, he easily snapped a woman's neck. [2] He was able to trade blows and significantly damage Kimiko in their confrontation (and even disembowel her), [3] while A-Train failed to do so even when rapidly slamming her head into concrete many times. [4] During his mission to assassinate Naqib, he split a man's head open by prying his jaws open. [5] He later knocked Butcher several feet with a single punch and held him against a wall with one hand. [6] His strength allowed him to completely overpower Starlight, who can punch through bricks and easily lift a car, by tossing her like a rag doll and slamming her into the concrete.

Superhuman Toughness: Black Noir is far more durable than normal humans. While not bulletproof,[6] his toughness allowed him to withstand Kimiko's superhuman strength without issue,[3] while she was able to significantly damage A-Train and even give him a compound fracture.[9] His sturdiness also allowed him to survive Naqib's self-detonated explosion at point-blank range, without even being moved, and only suffering burns to half of his face and chest.[5] He subsequently survived several explosions in Judy's house without being deterred. That being said, Noir is not invincible, as Hughie was able to shoot him at point-blank range with a pistol.[6]
Superhuman Speed: According to Mother's Milk, Black Noir can run faster than a car. [6] He was able to quickly slit a woman's throat and catch a glass she was holding before she dropped it, [5] and even avoid Homelander's heat vision during their first mission. [2]
Superhuman agility

Black Noir has also demonstrated impressive, almost superhuman, acrobatic skills, as demonstrated when confronting Frenchie and Kimiko. [3] He effortlessly climbed onto a rooftop. During his first mission with Homelander, he managed to acrobatically evade the latter's heat vision. [2]
Superhuman Reflexes: Noir was able to catch a glass before it fell to the ground just after slitting a woman's throat with his dagger, all at high speed. [ 5 ]
Superhuman Hearing: Black Noir possesses extremely acute superhuman hearing that aids him in his crime-fighting. He tracked Butcher from Becca's house and detected the Boys in a hidden room when Terror barked, revealing their location. [ 6 ]
Regenerative Healing Factor: Noir's body is capable of healing wounds and injuries at a far greater rate than normal humans. From multiple explosions, fire and heat, point-blank gunshot wounds, to shrapnel impacts, any injury seems to heal within hours, or at most, days. He has also recovered from the skull fracture given to him by Soldier Boy,[10] but appears to have lost his speech.[11] However, it is unknown if the hallucinations are a consequence of this. Pain Suppression: Black Noir is either completely immune to pain or has developed a high tolerance for it, as he gives no reaction when Naqib uses his self-detonation, leaving him with severe burns on his head and chest,[5] or when Hughie shoots through his hand at point-blank range.[6] He also showed no discomfort when the tracking chip in his wrist was cut.[12]
Longevity: Black Noir has been active since the 1970s. He is older than Gunpowder, however he shows no signs that his age has affected his physical condition and even appears to be stronger than he was forty years ago.

Martial Arts Master: Black Noir is an expert in hand-to-hand combat, highly trained in various forms of martial arts. According to his biography, he is a ninja and a lethal warrior, skilled in martial arts, trained by a sensei to become a death dealer. He defeated Kimiko during their confrontation, easily outmatching trained thugs and police officers. [3] During his mission to assassinate Naqib, he stealthily eliminated several terrorists. [5] Later, he confronted most of the Boys [6] and easily beat Starlight in a fight, which he would have knocked out had Queen Maeve not intervened. [7]
Expert Killer: Noir is a very skilled assassin. He is very adept at killing anyone Vought orders him to. He killed Naqib with great effort, decapitating him. He also overpowered The Female and, if not for his regenerative healing factor, Noir would have killed her.
Knife Mastery: Black Noir possesses great skill in throwing daggers and using them in hand-to-hand combat. This allowed him to damage Kimiko. [3] During his mission to assassinate Naqib, he took down numerous guards by slitting their throats and impaling them. He also decapitated Naqib [5] and stopped Mother's Milk with a single sword strike. [6] In his first mission with Homelander, he threw his knives with precision to intercept the latter's heat vision. [2]
Master Acrobat: In addition to being a superior martial artist and a competent assassin, Black Noir possesses great skill in using acrobatic movements to scale buildings and evade any danger. During his first mission against Homelander, he was able to use acrobatic movements to avoid his heat vision.

Acting: Like most superheroes, Black Noir has appeared in numerous films. In the 1980s, he attempted to make it as a comedy actor in Beverly Hills Cop. His dreams were dashed when Soldier Boy spread false information about Noir to Don Simpson.
Indomitable Will: Black Noir's loyalty to Vought and Homelander is absolute, and he demonstrates unwavering determination when performing tasks for them. He never gives up on the missions given to him. He is one of the few Super Heroes who is unafraid of more powerful Super Heroes or intimidating people like Billy Butcher. Although Black Noir makes decisions that could cost him Vought's secrets, he completely ignores any threats. Although he was initially afraid to confront Soldier Boy, due to the massive abuse he inflicted on him during his time in Payback, he eventually managed to overcome that fear to join Homelander and help him against Soldier Boy. No matter the cost, Black Noir will always try to complete his missions for Vought and his best friend, Homelander.

Master of Stealth: Noir is often used as a spy. He killed Naqib's men without making a noise. [5] On his first mission with Homelander, he crept up behind him without being detected by the latter's superhuman senses, only being noticed when a hostage spotted him. [2] Later, he managed to sneak up on Queen Maeve, who also possesses superhuman senses.
Expert Musician: Black Noir is a very skilled pianist, though not at concert level. He is able to play Chopin's Minute Waltz from memory.

Psychological
Brain Damage: Despite his healing ability, Black Noir still struggles to recover from brain damage. During his fight against Soldier Boy, he suffered severe head trauma that caused him to experience various mental issues, including amnesia, loss of speech, and hallucinations.

Biological
Nut Allergy: Black Noir is allergic to nuts. Queen Maeve takes advantage of this situation by forcing him to take an Almond Joy, giving her and Starlight a chance to escape. Upon ingesting something with nuts, he immediately goes into anaphylactic shock and requires an EpiPen injection to stabilize. If not administered in time, Black Noir could suffer severe brain damage. As seen, after being fed an Almond Joy and unable to use his EpiPen, Black Noir suffered severe brain damage and was left in a vegetative state. However, thanks to extreme medical care and with the help of his healing factor, Black Noir eventually regained the health he had before the incident.

Blunt Strength/Limited Durability: Superheroes of extreme strength can harm him; however, few reach this level. Queen Maeve has shown that she can subdue him and even force-feed him. While this could be attributed to him being taken by surprise, Homelander was unable to defeat him on their first mission together, despite Black Noir not attacking him but only protecting himself. The fact that Noir fled rather than going with Homelander to confront Soldier Boy indicates that his former team leader also has the strength to harm him. In fact, Noir's flashbacks to 1984 show Soldier Boy decisively overpowering and nearly killing him.
Limited Regeneration: Although Noir possesses a healing factor, his healing ability has been shown to be considerably limited, as he is unable to restore organs or bones. In Nicaragua, Soldier Boy horribly mutilated Black Noir by burning his face and partially destroying his brain. Homelander later punched him through the stomach, slowly killing him.

Equipment
Twin Combat Knives: Black Noir carries two curved combat knives on each thigh, most notably using them during his fight against Kimiko.
Throwing Knives: Black Noir carries several throwing knives on his suit, which he used during his fight with Kimiko and used to injure MM.
Folding Knives: Black Noir has four folding knives strapped to his upper arms, though he is never seen using them.
Ninjato Blade: Black Noir is seen sharpening a Japanese sword as he prepares to face Soldier Boy.
Gas Grenades: Black Noir has been known to sometimes use different gas grenades such as smoke grenades to draw the Boys out of hiding and a knockout gas grenade in a restaurant when ambushing Starlight.
EpiPen: Because of his nut allergy, Noir carries an epinephrine injection for emergencies.

Unlike his comic book counterpart, the television version of the character is portrayed as a tragic figure. He is not a Homelander clone, and he did not rape Billy Butcher's wife, Becca, or commit any of his particularly heinous acts.
Black Noir is a parody of Batman. He also shares traits with Snake Eyes, the "silent ninja" from G.I. Joe, as he has an extremely scary face, which he hides under a completely covering mask, and lacks a voice.
His seemingly frequent hallucinations of various talking cartoon animals and his scarred face hidden by a full-body costume may be a reference to Marvel's Deadpool, a similarly scarred ninja character.
Black Noir's nut allergy was inspired by his actor, Nathan Mitchell, who has a nut allergy in real life.
Black Noir is the only Supe who is a member of both Payback and The Seven.
The name Black Noir is redundant. "Noir" is simply the French word for black, so it could be translated as "Black Black," indicating that they chose it without thinking it through, just as the name Translucent sounds better than it is.
A line from Buster Beaver before Black Noir's death seems to imply that he might have been a Christian.
