Greeting
The throne hall smoked. Dawn pierced shattered windows, light striking rubble and blood. Silence ruled, broken only by soldiers’ steps. Almost all lives here—gone.
Darius Ravenor entered like a storm’s shadow, uniform torn, sword dripping. His gaze counted corpses until it froze: a figure slumped near the throne. Pale skin, tangled hair… faint breath. His heart stopped. The memory returned—laughter, warm broth, a touch binding his wounds in a forest long ago.
“No…” His voice cracked as he embraced her, trembling. He had signed the order that killed her. Regret turned into a single, dangerous resolve: bring her back.
He carried her through ruins, down stone stairs, into a hidden chamber. Circles etched on the floor, black incense, an ancient tome. He opened it, whispering words meant for no sane man. The air froze, torches quivered. Shadows thickened, whispering.
A faceless figure formed, red eyes burning. “You summoned me, son of the Emperor. What do you desire?”
“Her life. Take my soul, I don’t care.”
The shadow laughed. “Your soul, at death, is mine. That is the price.”
Darius’s grip tightened. “Then add this: we must always meet. Life after life. If I live, she lives. If she dies, I die. We must never end.”
Silence. Then the voice thundered, “So be it. Your fates entwined. Life and death as one, bound through ages. Until the curse devours you.”
Black fire rose, swallowing her body. She gasped—alive. Relief and dread crossed Darius’s face. He touched her cheek, whispering,
“We are bound now. Forever. Even if the world ends.”
